    Hi Scottishchick

glad to hear that things are OK between you and OH now.

    I'd just like to ask:
was the row about your MIL not moving in or about her telling the council that she lived with you?

FWIW, I think your MIL has put you in an awful position and I hope she sorts her life out without involving you too much.

Seems to be something you mention a lot - having to pick the right time to approach your OH, him being too grumpy / not in the right frame of mind to be asked about something - it is easy for someone reading your posts to jump to the conclusion that this relationship has enough problems already without an in-law moving in.;)

all the best, fwiw I think you made a mistake leaving the door open for her...

This hasn't been an easy week with having this news sprung on us and unsurprisingly there has been a bit of tension but then I wouldn't really need to post on here if things were going well. Normally we don't argue, maybe a wee bicker over minor things but nothing major. Yes, he can be a grumpy sod but he leaves work at 6.15am and doesn't get home till 7pm and he commutes an hour and a half each way. He then proceeds in working until about midnight every night at home so quite understandably he is very tired. Hopefully the pressure of work will ease off over the next few weeks as the holiday season passes and we can get back to normal. I can see how you may have jumped to that conclusion but no, our relationship is fine :D. I can't be the only person who picks the right moment to have important discussions with their partners? I think that's the main reason that I usually get my own way ;).

I've got no money, having been far from prudent and spent it all .. well, if I get another council house (and bu$%^r all those other more needy, never-had-a-chance folk further down the line) I can make and fritter all that money all over again!

People like this make me want to spit!!!

    Couldn't agree more!
    Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

  • Just to update, two weeks after the last post she came back from her holiday and said she wanted to talk to both of us. My OH was going to pick her up so I asked him what it was about and he said he thought she was going to ask to move in with us. I told him straight that it wasn't a good idea and that it could be the end of us if she moved in. We had a bit of an argument about it but nothing major which made me think he wasn't happy about it either but didn't want to be the one who said no to her so was glad that he could use me as an excuse. I was more than happy to be the scapegoat as long as she didn't move in. He went to pick her up and told her not to bother coming round as I'd said no, so she didn't come round to ask. :).
She has been staying with her ex since then and as far as I could tell there haven't been any problems even though it wasn't an entirely pleasant atmosphere.
Fast forward to today and she has been offered a one bedroom semi-detached bungalow in our village . So all's well that ends well. I'm just waiting for the backlash she's going to suffer from the village when they find out she got another house but it'll probably be like water off a ducks back to her.
With a bit of luck it'll be after Christmas before she gets the keys so we don't have to spend our well earned fortnight off from work moving her stuff and decorating.

Alright for some, I think I'll come and live in your village!

Glad it's worked out ok for you all in the end although I don't see why you and OH should be doing her decorating anyway. It's ok if she's elderly and/or unable to do things for herself, but by the sound of things, she's more than able to pay a decorator to do it for her. Same with moving, can't her ex help her to move? He'd probably jump at the chance! ;)

Good for you for standing up for the benefit of your family but what on earth is your local council doing giving this wastrel another bite of the cherry?! That really is just so unfair.

Sometimes - I can't help it! - I almost want to wish that natural justice comes sooner rather than later. Karma, mother-in-law .. karma ....
