I knew that the op must have had afro hair. It truly is a nightmare to look after especially now in the winter and especially if like me you live in an area where you are in the minority.

Most hair salons and ( including the only black hairdresser that is not registered, in my area anyway ) charge a complete and utter fortune for anything and everything and I for one cant afford it.

I braid my hair - myself

tip for Dora look at blackhairmedia (sorry cant post link) for tips on doing everything yourself, I learnt everything from this site.

I buy extensions to braid into my hair - this costs me twenty quid per month. (i buy online from cc hair and beauty and make sure that they are super curly and in my shade to blend). Once i braid it thats me for a month, just a wash once a week and thats it.

    - this is actually cheap

also Dora i for one will be looking for a wig, but only to give my hair a rest during the winter months and when i cant be arsed to braid same, (which if you havent got afro hair is really really time consuming - a good 4-6 hrs plaiting) but the wig will also be super curly and in the same shade as my own hair - and I always cut the front part of them off and pull my natural hair through to blend. Wearing a wig for a short period of time is not bad for afro hair it gives it a rest - but for a short period of time.

    hope that helps!

I knew that hair of various different ethnicities needs different training to do, but I had no idea that it was also a lot more expensive to get a cut for Afro hair. It seems so unfair :(.

I haven't the nerve to go to training nights like some of you do. Even after seeing a trained hairdresser once I later went to a different hairdresser and was accused by her of cutting my hair myself, the first one had done such a bad job!

OP, why would you want to go and buy an overpriced sandwich you could make just as well yourself for cheaper, and you could leave out the nasty weird bit you don't like instead of having to try and pick it out? And you don't want to go for a Starbucks, Starbucks is vile :D.
  • omg i just wrote a huge post and it crashed.

anyway - i think those who slagged off the op for her wearing a wig should apologise, as should those who called her a troll.

not everyone is at the frugal level as some of the oldstylers and the op may have come a huge way to get to the point she is at. hence her question.

I didn't take a genius to realise that the OP probably had afro hair as its an expensive form of hairdressing & wigs & hairpieces are frequently used.
I would never have known. I've never known anybody with afro hair, nor ever been anywhere where people had it. My exposure to afro hair is limited to 1970s pop videos.

    Not everybody has that knowledge.

Why especially in the winter? I'm not being rude, I'm interested. My hair looks rubbish all the time as I've got very fine straight hair. So with mine, it doesn't matter if it's summer or winter
  • Prior to this thread, I was not aware either that individuals with afro hair were more likely to wear wigs or have more hair problems in winter than any other group. It would be interesting to learn more about these issues if anyone has time to explain.

Well i am mixed race. I have full blown afro hair. The hair is tightly coiled this means that the natural oils do not make it to the ends of the hair. therefore it is really dry and needs extra deep conditioning treatments. A reason why we shampoo maybe once a week to 10 days and co-wash which is just conditioning washes in between.

The hair was designed to protect our scalps from the sun but living in a colder climate like here in the uk, especially in the winter the hair can become really dry and brittle when exposed to the elements. This is not great for our hair. And more so if you relax (chemically straighten your hair for manageability or style) it can break right off - mine has .....

it needs a lot of tlc - thats why sometimes wearing a wig in the winter for me gives my hair a rest. I deep condition daily then whilst my hair is braided underneath.

Not many black girls in the media have natural hair, do you honestly think that many a black popstar say beyonce, leona lewis and companies hair is natural. It is weaves, lace wigs etc etc....

We live in the western world, like to look as good as any other girl (well i do and yes i have tried natural but dont have the time and like fashion)

    hope that helps

now have to get to work

ps black women spend more on haircare than any other race for all off the above but tyra banks explains a lot for those that know nothing lol! on good hair on utube.

I did not criticise the OP....my only concern was the phrase asking if someone was more frugal than someone else, to me it makes it sound competitive! We are being told to think before we reply, can I also suggest people read over their posts before posting, then it might take away some of the confusion!

As a wig wearer, not black though, I find a wig really really hot in the summer, it's like wearing a fleece hat when you don't want to be! In the summer and at home I wear a scarf a lot of the time, it's cooler and also saves my expensive headgear for going out, lasts longer.

I imagine that the problem with 'black' hair in the winter is that it may frizz in damp weather, but I don't know this, just what I imagine.

Thanks alisara, I hadn't thought of that. I wonder if hair ever evolves. Like, say you had two people with afro hair and one had lived in the cold weather here all their life and one had just got off a plane from a hot country such as Africa. Would the UK one's hair behave better over the course of maybe a month? Does hair adapt?
