Get out the sandbags we're trenching ourselves in for the fight!!:T

Moving out should be totally the last resort so I'm glad you're sticking with this and are prepared to stand your ground against feral yobs who are making life unpleasant.

Reading this (growing) thread, there have been suggestions of administering some jungle justice. Tempting though it is, in this situation don't. Making the area an advert for "fight action - guaranteed every night" is the last thing you want. You'll get many more turning up just to watch and think it's cool.

Ignoring the problem (drug taking, drunken behaviour and so forth is a problem) will also lead to this place being known as a "safe" place to hang out and shoot up. Again, not what you want - used needles, broken bottles and tin foil littering the place is just nasty.

You're on the right track with involving the community and local rozzers. The more times they turn up and move the troublemakers on, the less desirable these yobs will find it to go there and "hang out". Buying a wrap only to have it confiscated seconds later by waiting coppers is a no-win for them and they'll soon learn to take their drunken loutish behaviour elsewhere. Contact your local MP, contact the local plastic police, contact the real police. If you can, get CCTV installed - if the area is a known and documented trouble spot, the council is more likely to agree to this.

Thanks for this. I've not been replying to these posts mainly because they're not helpful at all. I started this post in order to seek ideas from others about what action they have taken or just to gain from other experiences. Like I've said before, until you experience it you don't really appreciate how bad it makes you feel. I see this forum as a wider community to tap into over and above the authorities, so it's actually really helpful. The last thing I need is to get invovled or bogged down with posts like the one above. Yeah, everyone's entitled to an opinion, but I'm farily sure no one would put up with it. Perhaps the person above would simply move, costing £6k plus in moving expenses and as we've just moved in not somethiing we want to do for obvious reason. Get out the sandbags we're trenching ourselves in for the fight!!:T

Sorry mate dont wanna derail your thread, but the ones saying live with it,probably would be complaining put in the same position.
Keep positive and looking for a solution.
  • You need a 'Monsoon' rather than a Mosquito. The Monsoon is activated after hours, after movement in that area has been detected by a PIR for about 10 minutes and after an auduble warning a very fine water mist spray envelops the whole protected area, making it very uncomfortable to stay in.

Itmightbeusefuloneday it's all very well saying don't ignore it and fight but that has to be provided your local police is on side....with us they really couldn't have been bothered until the community officer stepped in....It's not always that easy to tackle these issues when you're already fighting a losing battle with the authorities...;)

    Thanks - totally agree.

Loved reading this - thanks. I'm starting to feel really positive..

    Like this idea!

Thanks to all of the above. I've just spoken to the library area manager and they're looking at putting CCTV up, although dummy CCTV. Might work? The library are really concerned and are talking to the police and ASB officer. She also told me that the police are looking at using the library as a base after hours. Things like taking their breaks in the library office and doing their paperwork there. This way it's an informal police station and if the yobs know that they're not likely to turn up. Irregular usage by the police makes it an unsafe place for them to hang out. I like this idea. I've suggested the mini mosquito (and Monsoon - thanks julian) to the local ASB officer and police so I'll see what comes back. I'd even be willing to part fund it and make it a pilot site. I'll keep going.

Hey, so far the police seem to be on our side as is the library site. So, so far so good. If the situation is still the same in a few months time, then clearly it's a no win situation and other measures will have to be looked at, which include moving of course. Not something we want to do though. So far I'm happy that the police are doing what they can with the support of others, but results need to come quick in that the youths stop using it to drink and take drugs.

Good, it sounds as though progress is being made and puts more pressure on the thin blue line to do their job rather than just handing out speeding tickets.

Now you have their support, keep the momentum going. These things take time, effort and willpower I'm afraid. Make sure you keep the library / ABS officer informed of how many, how often and what really helped. If you go quiet they'll assume the problem is sorted and stop any effort to resolve it further. If other law abiding members of your community are concerned or affected, get them to write in and add weight to what you're reporting.

I would say the ideal situation to prevent re-occurrence in later years is the police using it as an evening base.

NEH - I know it's hard if your local police don't give a stuff and just frequent the nearest doughnut shop. Thankfully for the OP, things look good so far so there's no need for the more nuclear options.

Thanks for this. I've emailed both the police and ASB officer today with further details of minor incidents and suggestions for solving. I'm going along to the parish council next week too, just to see what the police report to them. There's been plenty of incidents reported so I want to see what the parish council say too.

The response from our ASB officer re the mosquito device - makes you wonder what the hec is going on. That's one door closed, looking at CCTV options.

"There are complications and legal issues (civil liberties, human rights etc) which mean that there is not an authority that would install one in a public space and especially not so close to a public footpath."
