Hope nobody minds if i start a diary on here, ive done a couple before when i wanted to pay off cc's and save up and i find they really motivate me.

we currently live in a tiny two up two down, that's quite scruffy, in an area i don't want to be in and and its starting to get me down. We intended to move after 2 yrs max but events got in the way and here we are over 8 yrs later and the place feels sooo small. This is probabally because we have a new addition to our family, a beautiful baby girl who arrived in june 12 weeks early at 1lb 13oz. This was the most horredous thiing that has happened to us, but she pulled through and she's now a massive 7lbs 8.5ozs and is currently drooling on my lap. :p

So the aim is to pay off as much as poss so we can afford a much bigger place, the mort is currently 65,215 and the rate is a low 1.75% so we should be able to overpay quite a bit. i'm on mat leave until april so have a bit of time on my hands(ha ha we'll see) so let the challenge begin....

  • I feel for you. My 1st house with DH was the same size as yours and we filled it, so it must be hard with a baby too. Good luck on your challenge. no-one bites here - just go for it.

Aww such a big girl and such a good weight for a 12 week preemie. Glad all is ok.

Have you looked about to see what yours could possibly sell for and how much a bigger place would cost so you have a target or is it way too early for that??

I would consider savings in ISA,s first as you can get 2.8% tax free and you never know how long you will be off work and good luck to you and your family

oh dear not a good start i'm afraid, our car has had to have a new gear box and its costs us £1950!!!!!!!! Its an automatic one and the only place that would do it is 40 miles away ho hum. I've put it on my cc and will have to pay that off first, we have savings of £5000 so it's not too much stress but i really didn't want to touch that.
    So i'll be back soon....

Ouch!! I guess that shows us how important it is to have back up savings, not that that's gonna make you feel any better!
Hope to see you back soon.

    I'm back!!!!!!!!!

The cc has been paid off and the savings are still at £5000 so can now tackle the mort. It's now down to 64,700 thanks to a few normal monthy payments.Mind you i think i'll probabally start with a vengenge after xmas as i've still got all the pressies to buy etc, but i'msure there'll be some bits and bats i can throw at it-i need to really sit down and see what to get everyone and how much we've got-we have £180 in the gifts etc acc so that'll go someway towards stuff.
catch you later baby is getting tierd of her play gym, there's only so often you can listen to fere jacques!!

I've been chucking whatever money i have at the mort and somehow ive managed to get it down to 64271.92 and i dont even feel skint and miss it. It's probabally cos i'm not going out now after having the baby. It's all rock and roll here. The next official payment goes out on mon so i'll update next then. I think these updates are going to be short and sweet, prem babies can be quite demanding. Stay Warm!

I think that just shows the benefits of making random £20 payments here and there. What do you do, do you pay it right over or do you save random bits and bobs and then make a larger 1 off overpayment?
