Meat that is not produced organically has probably had things added to it that you would not want to consume (i.e. hormones, water and various chemicals) – as for free range meat it at least goes some of the way towards avoiding those additives, although it is not as ‘clean’ as organic.

    Corned beef is just beef.

The only thing added to it is sodium nitrite which is a salt preservative that is also used in organic meat and approved by the soil assosiation.

I tend to eat it in sandwiches or in a stew added near the end.

Its also nice layered with onions, leeks and thinly sliced potato then topped with cheese and baked in the oven.
  • I bought corned beef and onion sandwich filler from morrisons, but I am going to make my own now - It's just corned beef, onion and mayonaise and it's yummy

    Hi
I do a similar corned beef hash, but I fry the onions and corned beef together and then mash the corned beef mix with the potatoes. Put it under the grill to brown on the top. Delicious with tomato ketchup- real comfort food

Tried this out last night, as your recipe sounded the easiest, and it was yummy!
  • I chop a tin of cb up. add a can of baked beans and a can of tinned tomatoes. My son loves this!

try substituting tinned tomatoes for a tin of heinz (it has to be Heinz!) veg soup - absoluely delicious!!!!!!!! We have it with mash or (shock horror! Hope Jamie Oliver isn't reading this) chips
  • My mam used to make a dish called panackaltee- doubt thats the correct spelling but hey ho! If I remember rightly she started off with a roasting tin, to it you add corned beef cubed, slices of pot, chunks of carrot, onion, liver went in too I think? Cubes of turnip also went in, and a cup of water. The whole shebang went into the oven on a low heat for lomg time. Sure its super cheap 'cos there was 4 of us kids so cash was tight.
Corned beef and beans mixed together was a favourite too, served with beans and sliced white.
Nowadays, about all I do with corned beef is make it into pies, Boil your spuds, add half of the chopped onion to pots- the different texture and flavour of raw and boiled onions is good. I dont eat pies cos I'm a veggy, but the boyf enjoys them. Here's a top tip for pies too- put a spoon full of brownsauce or sweet pickle in with the corned beef/mashed tatty/raw-boiled onion mix, gives the pie an interesting tang!

You have got me thinking on this one - But it bought up a race memory. What your Mum was referring to was Pan Haggerty, which I often make with the variation of cubed Corned Beef in it (Tip keep the CB in the fridge it cuts a lot easier) Also there is a meal called Durham Squab Pie which is very similar to what you wrote, it also goes well with Corned Beef instead of Flying Rats LOL :rotfl:

I hope this clears things up a little for..

is sliced crnedbeef or tinned best for these recipes
  • Tinned probably, as it's easy to cut into cubes. I agree with Mr Proctalgia, it is easier to cut if it's been in the fridge. I usually open the tin, put a plaster on my finger where I have inevitably cut myself, then leave the CB in the fridge for an hour or 2 so that it's really cold!

Corned beef and leek pie is absolutely delicious. Just cook your leeks and then mix in the chopped CB and fill your pie
  • I make corned beef casserole. My lot love it!
Slice corned beef up, slice some potatoes, and onions add frozen peas. Layer it all in a dish, corned beef, peas and onions, potatoes. up tand up till you've used it all up. Pour over a pint of Oxo, and stick in the oven till the potatoes are soft. Easy!

  • As the title says really, Not sure if this has been done before Pink-winged (apologies if has), thought we could do a thread for corned beef recipes as corned beef is always cheap and can be bought in most supermarkets on offer.
