I'll think you'll find that a refund is with a proof of purchase only

Otherwise shoplifters will be taking products off the shelf and taking them to the cash desk for a full refund

Which has been tried in many of my shops!

You are wrong here, they are entitled to ask the buyer for proof of purchace wether it be a receipt or a bank statement etc.

Only if you require a refund!

And I wouldn't accept a bank statement as proof of purchase....not near enough information on it!

Thinking about what you said....you are right......the shop can ask you for a receipt but you dont have to legally produce one as I said earlier as the shop is not legally bound to give you one....technical point but important!

    No its not.

If you have a faulty item and it is branded to the store then you are entitled to a refund at the last selling price regardless of whether you have a receipt or not. Obviously it does depend on what you are returning, the age of the item & possibly wear and tear if it is for clothes/shoes etc but you are definately entitled to a refund without a receipt on faulty goods.

If it is an item that is available in lots of stores then you have to prove it was purchased from that store.

    Thats a toughie.

If sportsworld is the only shop that sells those trainers then its not a prob.

Its actually your responsibility to prove you bought them from that store. They may respond with 'well, you could have bought them from anywhere'.

Its still worth a try though - especially if you only want an exchange. There is definately no harm in trying.

6 week old trainers with occasional wear and the sole coming off definately means the shoes should be exchanged. You are actually entitled to a refund without a receipt if goods are faulty. Its just the fact that the trainers are probably available in lots of stores that makes this more difficult. Shame you didn' tpay by debit card - a bank statement would have been fine as proof of purchase.

    Good luck!
If you have no proof of purchase, then they could say that you could have nicked it from them.
I saw a TV program where a woman was shoplifting from M&S & then going round to the customer service counter for a refund!!!

To be fair, they have always had that policy and it is displayed prominently in the store. Fact is, we all shop at Sports World for one reason and one reason alone - it is cheap as chips. As is their after sales (in fact, pre-sale) service. You get what you pay for in this instance...

Totally agree. I have bought stuff from Sportsworld (and from their previously named stores) and always make sure I am 100% happy with what I am buying before purchase because I know I cannot take stuff back afterwards. They do have changing rooms but they are very limited and hidden away (the one in our local store is anyway!). But as Clasics has pointed out they are cheap and this is reflected in this policy.

I have in the past got some fantastic bargains from Sportsworld, for DD and OH, all this work T shirts come from there, he's an XXL and infact it's one of the few stores where he can have a choice in that size.

You can still get a refund on a faulty item without a receipt though :)

If you do not have a receipt you will NOT get a refund even if the item is faulty. How on earth can the shop be sure you paid for the item in the first place????

You will be offered an exchange or credit note......look around at all the major high street shops T&C's

Major high street T&C's are fine but your statutory right is that you are entitled to a cash refund on a faulty item regardless of whether you have a receipt or not. Obviously as I've said before it depends on the length of time you have had the item and possible wear and tear but you are defiinately entitled to a refund as long as the item is branded to that store as I mentioned before :)

A high st store will try and offer gift vouchers or credit notes but if the customer knows their rights and demand a cash refund then they are entitled to one.

I appreciate what you are saying about 'how do you know if it has been paid for in the first place' - you dont! Unfortunately that is irrelevant if the item is faulty at the time of purchase and the buyer didn't notice (if it had been purchased!!!):D

Dosent matter if the item is branded to that store the item could have been bought months ago, and even if its there own brand they are often available elsewhere, alot of Argos own brand items for example can be picked up in discount catalogue stores etc.

you are right so in that case the store wouldn't have to refund - although do argos do own brand items? I didn't know that!! :)

In some cases though where an item is branded to one store only then the store does have to give a refund.

I mentioned the time factor before. There are lots of factors to be taken into consideration when doing refunds. Each individual case is different to a certain degree but it doesn't alter the fact that a cash refund is sometimes unavoidable for a faulty item that is relatively new and the reciept has been lost (or thrown away!!).
