  • Pitlanepiglet is garlic not poisonous to dogs? I thought I saw someone talking about it earlier on the petboard?

Do you use frontline for the cats? I useit for my dogs and when I had cats in the past....fab stuff. It is expensive, but I weighed it out against all the stuff I bought when the cat got fleas to rid the house of them, and it worked out cheaper! Prevention is more frugal than the cure, apparently.
    :):)

I agree totally! our old dog had flees for the first time this year and they were bug*ers to get rid of - we tried everthing and the only thing that worked was Frontline and as you said it's not expensive when you work out what it cost trying lots of other things.
I tried teatree, and brewers yeast as well as all sorts of sprays and shampoos and cheaper one spot type of stuff.

It's one of those subjects that gets lots of discussion! In the view of many, it's a very helpful supplement that has been used for thousands of years. A dog would have to eat something like 50 bulbs of garlic to hit a toxic level.

As with many holistic things, there are many "scientists" who would like us to believe that only chemical treatments are good and that holistic treatments are bad...

I have a dog that has an auto immune condition that appears to have been triggered by vaccines, flea treatments and other chemical treatments. I'm happy with natural alternatives but clearly others should form their own view.

  • It makes perfect sense to me, I would use holistic before anything chemical, and do where I can, and knew about onions, grapes, chocolate etc. but today was the first I had heard about garlic, so I was just wondering! The thing is, our dog as a child lived until it was 16 years old or so, possibly a bit older than that, and our last dog was 13, and they ate anything and everything going with no ill effects. I won't take the chance with this dog now as she seems a bit more delicate, but I do wonder about all these theories. Sure, haven't dogs been eating human scraps since time began?

  • Jackie, I agree, it's a whole different subject but IMV modern kibble fed, highly vaccinated dogs don't seem to be living as long as dogs used to live. However, the industries involved are highly unlikely to want us to realise that! Interestingly, onions fall in the same category as garlic, fine in small quantities and potentially toxic in higher quantities although I had thought that they were toxic at any level. Ours does have onions occasionally, usually when she's finishing up the hooman food :D

It occurs to me that I'm turning into my Grandmother and I wish she was still around for me to tell her that she was right after all! She died 11 years ago at 85 but was always of the view that modern wasn't always best. I was a child of my time who bought into all the advertising and though that modern, chemical treatments, cleaners and medication MUST be best and that she was a bit batty and behind the times....I now carry a first aid kit where the first line of defence is often an essential oil, I clean with stardrops only and avoid chemicals where possible - she may have been old, but she was right!
