Had a bad fall on the ice yesterday. It was spectacular and very graceful but Ive wrecked my back. I was going to pick my daughter up from school so had to drag myself there in agony. Im quite tough but this really shook me up, was crying and shaking. Bit better today but still in pain. Think I will be off work next week as carnt drive safely. On the bright side I had just filled the cupboards/freezer and topped up my gas/elec so I can be in pain and be warm and fed.
Talking about cowboy builders, it is very difficult to sort out the professionals from the rubbish. Ive found going to established firms/companys is the best. Pay more but up to now jobs Ive had done were fab. Used Britsh Gas for my new boiler, everyone said they were too expensive but they were brill and have come when they say they will. For minor jobs Il use a local guy and hope for the best. Never pay up front, they should have funds for materials for jobs. Also use word of mouth. I need a job doing on my joists but dont know anyone decent. Mum had a roofing job done and they were really good so I will use them (if given a decent quote of course).I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round0 -

It may be worth contacting the Trading Standards Department of your local council. They often keen a list of approved tradesmen in various categories which should hopefully lessen the chance of getting a coyboy.0 -
starsandmoons go and get your back checked at A&E, I fell last November and hurt my tailbone, and it was sore up until May of this year when I fell again, only it hurt much more this time. Being a woman, the enormous black and bluebruises were not enough to persuade me to get any help at all for the first week or two, then it was discovered I have fractured my cocyxx - I probably did the bulk of the damage the first time, but the second fall also caused other damage in the small of my back, it got gradually worse for a month of two, and I was even back at work for a few weeks, but I have been off now since July and am still in a great deal of pain and reliant on painkilling meds to get me through the day. I have developed really bad anxiety and depression, which I am over the worst of now thankfully, but this has all been down to my fall, as otherwise life is great just now. I still am annoyed at myself for not going for help the first time it happened, as I might not have been where I am now. You would be surprised what good a little bit of good physio can do for you.
Sorry for the lectureI just wouldn't wish this last year on anyone, especially as it could be sorted out much more easily than I managed. x
It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0 -
Cowboy builders - One of my family members nearly divorced because of what happened to their house when they employed a builder. It's terrible what they do to people's lives. My friends and I ask each other if they can recommend anyone for household jobs and try to use the ones who have done good work in the past.
Temperatures - My kitchen doesn't have heating and the thermometer was off the scale this morning despite leaving the heating on all night, programmed at 14 degrees. I heard it come on during the night so it was cold! I'm afraid of getting burst pipes so I think I'll have to keep using the central heating during the night for a while as the weather isn't getting any warmer.
Groceries - I'm able to use the stockpile I have and am desperate to get out and replace it but the state of the ice here means it's not an option at the moment. My neighbours have asked if I need anything but I don't.
Positive benefit - I've not spent much money this week!

Thats were Im sore! I fell on that bit full force. I know a walk in centre that does x rays, may be a bit nicer than A & E. Im a typical woman too and have a high pain threshold so could have done serious damage and not realised. I was walking like a crab earlier. God just had a horrible thought about internal bleeding! Or maybe thats dramatic. Boyfriend is coming over later so we can have a nice date in the Xray clinic then he can hoover up for me and change the bed. I know how to show a man a good time :rotfl:
Thanks for sharing your story. I wasnt going to bother with medical treatment but think I will now.I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round0 -

don't worry about that, I have long term illhealth and have learned that men love to take care of us....:D DH is a much better ''nurse'' tome than I am to him when he's ill. I get bored0 -
I'm currently listening online to the debate in Parliament about altering the clocks to save daylight. (Lighter Later campaign). Money Saving Expert just got a mention as being representative of public opinion, along with others like Mori, who do the polls.

Get yourself to the hospital stars and moon!
Don't be a numpty like and suffer in silence. Only two weeks of agony to turn at the hospital for them to say eh you've broken your knee half in half!
Well the car of doom has struck again.. AA haved taken OH to get a hire car for the weekend. The bleeding alternator belt has snapped again and a bit wedged under some casing. Cracking. AA have said it could be next week before they can recover the car to the garage because of the weather. He can't tow the car because of the amount of car on the road. Can't believe it, four belt sone june and it only had a new engine in September:eek:.
On the plus side i've finished shopping for my nieces and nephew. Found an unopened new soap set in the bedroom, so wrapped it for my sister. Found two model cars for my dad, he collects them, so he'll be chuffed.
Ceridwen, i used to have it on direct debit, but instead of taking it monthly, the council tax office took the full amount in one go. Then tried to take the monthly amount so i cancelled the direct debit.
So made lots fcakes for school, so thats done, shot loads of rubbish out. So now just waiting to go to the school fair at 1:30.
Keep warm peeps, its going to be cold!0 -
Lots of snow still here. Haven't been out all week but it looks pretty icey so I don't think I'll be venturing into town on foot with DS until it goes. We have a fold-up buggy but I haven't used it and I don't really want to try it for the first time during a cold snap! We'll be using the car for our food shop.
My lovely in-laws are snowed in where they are & haven't been able to get out to do their food shopping but have assured me that they have enough in the freezer to get by. They are supposed to be coming over this weekend to help me celebrate my birthday but if it stays like this we'll probably have to re-schedule. I'd love to see them but I don't want them to put themselves at any risk, difficulty or discomfort to make it over. I've been totally useless at organising anything for my birthday this year because I've been so wrapped up in caring for DS, so it's no hardship if I have to delay celebrations until the weather improves!
Have had the hard drive in my new PC swapped as I was getting an intermittant screeching noise that I think was down to the drive. Only time will tell if that has fixed it but I'm crossing my fingers! At least all the other potential causes aren't as important for the longevity of the PC! They were good & sent a courier to deliver the new drive and take away the old one. I thought he might not make it through the snow but he managed it.
If we lose power here then we'll be stuffed for heat and cooking but at least we got some large tea-lights last time we went to Ikea, so we'll have light. I normally have enough snack food to feed me for three days & DH doesn't mind eating cold beans out of a tin. We have some back-up cartons of milk for DS. As for keeping warm, DH doesn't feel the cold as much, we have plenty of duvets & I have thermal underwear and a selk bag. The selk bag is big enough to fit both DS and me so we'll be warm enough!0 -
Well, I have been renovating my house from top to toe this year and I moved in in January when we had the rest of the snow. I have had average tradesmen, an outstanding plumber who created a bathroom out of thin air but boy did I pay for it, and this bloody muppet!! If I had known then what I know now I would have retrained as a plumber not an accountant. I work two jobs and money is not easy to come by and this bloody bloke knew it! I just stood and looked at his work and thought I cannot believe he thinks it is acceptable!!!! The trouble is they just end up blaming you, this time it was my fault for supplying the door - which he had measured!!!! Obviously a guy who is used to working on building sites. He threatened to walk off the job. I told him to crack on. He needed the money more than he needed his pride I guess. I just wanted rid as I already have someone lined up to sort out his mess. Its ok if you are from the area and know people but when you dont know a soul you generally have to take a gamble. It was just the straw that broke the camels back. I am working like a loon, have exams in 10 days that I am nowhere near ready for, trying to think about christmas and this just pushed me over the edge.
Now, where is that vodka?!!
And S & M (ooh errr! ) get yourself to hospital. I have scoliosis and know how dodgy backs are. The sooner you are seen the sooner you can start to heal.0
