Redlady_1 Sorry to hear about the Cowboy Carpenter, its so upsetting when you get a bad job done. There are some great craftsmen out there but how you sort the wheat from the chaff is beyond me. Our kitchen worktops were 'fitted' by a cowboy joiner - he cut them an inch short of the walls leaving a jagged edge all along and then bodged the gap with tiles and sealant. I cried buckets when we saw what he had done as we had saved for years to get them done and could afford to get them redone
This kinda sounds awful, but I'm glad it's not just me gets the cowboys... I thought I was totally inept at getting good tradesmen, obviously it's more widespread than I thought.
We have quite a bit of work needs doing on the house, but I'm so wary of the cowboys, and like you say how do sort out the good from the bad.
Even if they do a half decent job they always seem to want to convince you you need a new 5K roof, even though you know the whole roof was replaced 10 years ago with a 30 year guarantee.
It's heartbreaking when you've saved and saved and they do such a carp job.0 -
Well outside temp reads -5 right now, we shouldnt moan cos I know you poor people in scotland would think thats a pretty warm temp to yours reading - 18 now........
Hope your all keeping warm.....0 -
had a really good day yesterday - cooked a 2kg chicken and i am amazed at my stretching abilities!!
roast dinner last night
sweet and sour chick pasties(enough for 2 meals each for the 3 of us)(these in freezer)
sweet and sour chicken curry(eating this tonight)
stock from the bones
got some breast left so will make more pasties
all the meat from the bones left too so some will go towards a soup and some will go towards a pasta bake!!
when i make soup there will be at least 10 portions so will freeze all these!!
also made a batch of mince pies but these are almost gone as DH didn't make it to work yesterday so as soon as they came out the oven, he was munching on them!!
i have serious cabin fever, i am fed up of the snow and not being able to go anywhere, we are going out today - not too far as i suspect it's far too icy - but somewhere - probably to the shop as we are running low on milkreally hope they have some in the shop and I NEED COFFEE i have run out of the stuff  and i am now using my senseo machine(which i don't use that often as the pods are expensive) and only have 5 pods left for that, then i will be on green tea(which i can stand) but only have about 6 or so tea bags laft, then i will be onto normal tea
i know the local shop don't sell the coffee i buyso i might have to try some other brand
one thing is that this weather is good for my grocery budget - i haven't been and drawn out my grocery money yet so already i am on 3 days NSD and we don't really need much when we go out later so i won't be spending too much!!
charlies-aunt - we had another 3-4 cms overnight here in grimsby and it was sooooo cold, heard on look north that some places in our region got down to -16 degrees:eek:0 -
With the benefit of hindsight, I would suggest not paying anything in advance and only paying in full when the job is completed satisfactorily... or get several personal recommendations.
The big mistake we made was paying up front - thought we were being fair by doing so (to pay for materials etc) but once the cash had changed hands, his attitude changed and we had an uphill job trying to get him in to start and finish the job - a days work was stretched over about 6 weeks - never turned up with the right tools/materials, his van kept breaking down, he was ill etc :mad:

BB - I've not had my hair cut in 14 months :rotfl: you're doing better than me!
It's FREEEEEEEZING today. No more snow but it was -12 when we set off for work this morning and when we got into the city centre the temperature there (it's on the newspaper building) was showing -7! No wonder I felt so cold. I've been looking at sheepskin coats on-line, I'm not going to buy one but I do curse that I am 6" taller than my mother who had one made to measure in the early 70s which fit me when I was about 11 but hasn't fit me since then :rotfl: it went to charity in the end because it didn't fit my mum anymore either but it would be just wonderful at the moment.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member #398 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts :T

Morning all,
Well good job I wasn't relying on the milk from the milklady for breakfast this morning as it was frozen solid when I brought it in! Not really suprised by that as I had a text from my OH sayng it was reading -16 on the car thermometer when he set off for work at 5.30 this morning. No more snow for the last couple of days but with temps like that what we've got isn't going anywhere! Bit worried about the parents in law who are supposed to be driving up from down southshire tomorrow. FIL is desperate to get home and doesn't believe that the snow is a problem as there is none outside the front door there. (He's 82 and a tad dippy these days so will take some convincing - hope MIL and BIL manage it but not rating their chances.)
Here on the home front got a stir crazy DD as we've not been out to anywhere more exciting than Mr T's in days - she's 20 months but not walking yet so playing out in the snow not really an option yet. OH is also going batty as he's not been able to take the new car we had to get on Monday out for a proper play yet - he's driving it to work but not really getting out of 3rd at best, first day we had it he didn't get out of 2nd! What is it about boys and cars?:D0 -
morning all,
no idea what the temp is here apart from frrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeezzzziiinngggggg!!
just browsing the lidl website and spotted this which is sooooo unfair as a, i have no space for it and b, i have no money for it!! lol
have to sort out a passport size photo this weekend as my DL needs a new one,tbh i don;'t think i've changed all that much (apart from a few more grey hairs).
hubby actually remembered to take a flask of coffee with him to work!! first time without me having to nag/make it myself.

Brrr! Good morning! Only just managed to get on here! Too busy nattering to dd. She got home ok but all the other trains after hers were stopping at Shenfield and travellers then had to catch a bus onwards! Just hope she manages to get back into work tomorrow! Bless her she brought with her 3 bags of shopping (lots of lovely treats) from M & S shop near the station. Know I am still ill as it took me all of an hour to eat 1 choc eclair!
Poor girl had a very cold awakening this morning as yet again our condensing combi boiler pipes froze up again and stopped the system working. The boiler is in our airing cupboard, upstairs at the back of the house, and the pipes run outside around the house to the side wall. Poor dh, who also has this rotten virus, had to get well wrapped up and climb a ladder with a paint stripper to defrost the pipes! We have decided that next year (after the wedding) we will pull down the kitchen ceiling (it does need replacing after a previous leak in bathroom) and re-run the pipes under the bathroom limiting the amount of piping that is open to the elements! We can then replace our kitchen lighting for something more economical to run so 2 birds so to speak.
We have had to postpone our appointment with the wedding florist as her area is even worse than ours, very icy roads so a no go. Off to hobbycraft instead to see what we can diy. It will be my first outing since being ill so won't be for long and I will stay away from other folks!
Right little dog has been out trying to eat the birdseed/bread scraps again! so off to defrost her again with the blowdryer!:rotfl:Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.
