Days like today I am glad we have both a gas and an electric cooker hooked up and working. When my dad said I was nuts last year keeping the gas one when I bought the electric one I did think twice, but hearing of power cuts etc I am so glad, its costing me nothing having them both there and its giving me peace of mind at the moment.0

Everybody should have a backup plan for cooking, lighting and, if poss, heating as well. If your cooker is elect - then buy a calor camping gas stove. If you're all mains gas - then buy a small elect oven/grill.
Anybody can have a Calor gas mobile heater - they kick out a fantastic heat and its pay as you go !
Never rely only on one way in case that one way goes down the tubes It's only common sense but might make a huge difference to you some day.0 -
Kidcat... sometimes it takes a while for the birds to find the food, but dont worry they will. At the moment I've got 3 peanut feeders, 3 fat ball holders, 3 normal seed feeders, 1 nigerseed feeder, 2 dishes of mixed food ie fruit, oats, dried mealworms, bread & suet a bowl of water & a birdbath on my patio & in the tree Ive got icecream cones filled with a mix of seed, chopped peanuts & fat & coated in peanut butter then rolled in seed, bagels spread with peanut butter & rolled in seed & some plain popcorn on strings & everyday I'm refilling except for the niger seed, it's just not been touchedSometimes not moving backwards is as much an achievement as moving forwards is on other times. It's only a bargain if you were going to buy it anyway!0 -
Going to see if I can persuade someone to enter the loft of terror and take on a mission to seek out our electric heaters just in case, and if all else fails we can always use the gas bbq for cooking!!0

Am so jealous of seemingly the rest of the country with all the snow. Not so much as a raindrop in Devon. It is so cold though. Coming from up north I can usually feel the difference of it being a couple of degrees warmer than the north west but even to the hardened northerner that I am, it's cold. Dread to think how cold it must be in other places! If by some miracle it does snow then we're all stocked up with food and candles just in caseTimes is 'ard.0

I refilled my bird feeder with seeds last weekend - hadn't filled it since before the summer. I don't think anything's touched it yet although there are some voracious looking magpies who look like they would snaffle the whole thing given half a chance.
I think I will make something with lard for them.
Hmmm, wondering if I could make some kind of a hanging feeding platform out of string and a milk carton - any ideas?Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

I expect Devon and its close counties will get it if america get hit by blizzards. Worth while keeping an eye on their news I suppose0
