Last guest just left and all seemed to have a good time, fireworks went without a hitch and by pleasant coincidence the theme park around the corner set theirs off while we were out so we got a good view too, found fireworks from last year that werent used due to extreme weather so very carefully tried them and they went too. Dad was bit miffed cos the ones he bought were very expensive but the older ones I had got and only paid £10 for were just as good
Older kids all stood outside to watch while the littlies decided to watch from the living room window, we sat in the bay and watched all the pretties in the warmth and safety. Have to say it was much better than if we had had to control DS6 outside, it scared me silly the thought of him being anywhere near explosives, so was very relieved when after the first firework they asked to come in.
Loads of food left over, so can have a lazy day tomorrow and then freeze the remains. Made good use of the oven being on and managed to cook a whole bag of baking potatoes, an apple pie, chocolate brownies and a loaf.
DD4 fell asleep on the sofa very happy and contented, whereas DS6 had to be cajoled into bed a few minutes ago
Mardatha - am secretly a little jealous of your snow.:o0 -
ooo we've just had a bit of hailstones!!!
mardatha gis some snow!!! we love it here!
Just a quick update, the freezer is up and running!!!:D:D:D
It is now working, oh yes and three packs of sausagesnicely freezing inside it. So now everything is switched over, so hopefully fingers crossed this one won't break.
Spent the day using up dodgy food, do now we havea whopping 12 cheese and bacon pasties, four blackberry/apple pastries, two quiches, and a huge carrot cake (cheers weezl!). Just made some very quick jamppy blobs with the leftover pastry.
Quite pleased with myself as i now know pack lunches and are sorted for monday and tuesday.
Just need to chop the cooked chicken ready for the freezer.
gailey i agree with you about morrisons, now way could i do a full shop with them, costs far too much.
Oh and in sainsbugs the following have gone up.
basics plain flour 1.5kg was 42p now 52p
sainsbugs strong bread flour was 60p now 68p.
on the plus side tits £1.09 for 150g of basics salami, a new addition, tastes fine so its for sandwiches, pizza's etc.0 -
Still up. Youngest two, DS and DD2 (15) had big fight this evening, escalated from "normal" (sigh!) low level sniping into full scale slanging match, hurling abuse and shoes. Even carried on shouting at one another from their separate bedrooms, where I'd insisted they go to calm down. They are asleep now but I'm not. Teenage hormone overload, tiredness (both working today), sibling rivalry and struggle to become separate individuals (twins) but I do wish they could see how much pleasanter their lives (and ours!) would be if they were only a little bit nicer to each other a little bit more of the time! They used to get on so well when they were little and I am sad that they seem to hate one another so much now. Some of it though, I am sure, is habit, being as unhelpful as possible if the other one asks them something, the tone of voice they use to each other. Anyone else who's gone through this/works with teenagers etc got any ideas how I help them put something more constructive in place? It is really getting me down. Have done the teenage thing before (DD1 is 30) but only one at a time! Although toddlers and teenager had its moments too! Oh well, better get to bed, I suppose.Jan 2011 GC £300/£150.79 (2 adults, 2 teens, working dog, includes food/cleaning/toiletries)0

Snow was just an inch and has gone to solid ice. Lovely sunny morning but very cold so far. Am really fedup today and down, so I need to get out a walk to lift meself, so am glad its nice.
Was thinking (always a mistake innit!) & feel today that I have to lift & hold everybody up here, but once they are up, they soar away and leave me behindif you understand that .
I worked so hard on the RV trying to stop him going into depression and spending his early retirement in front of a telly. Encouraged him to buy another bike, but that meant all our savings & no holidays any more. Now he spends all his time along the road at his pals working on their bikes, which is fine, but leaves me sat here.
Knitted meself to a standstill doing him gloves/socks/neckwarmers, loads of socks for all the family, and I'm sat here with cold feet cos I gave them all away
Maybe time for a wee bit memeMEEE time here eh ! :rotfl::rotfl:Trouble is, I need a hobby or interest and I havent got one...0 -
((Hugs)) Mardatha.
Could you find anyone else in your village to knit with? Start a knitting group or invite someone round?
I'm off to walk the dogs whilst it's still fairly quiet out - I love Sunday mornings before the traffic gets going into the city. One of the very few times I can cross the road without waiting for ages.Aspire not to have more but to be more.

well back to typical november weather today and I see that `positive weather solutions` are forcasting nasty conditions for many, including floods and I was told yesterday about the local floods, years ago when the sea came in and boats came onto the fields and people went down the hill to watch
We got the bus yesterday to our nearest little town that we haven`t visited as yet as we`ve been busy. Only a little village bus and it was great, everyone knew everyone getting on at the various villages. Really old fashioned and everyone chatting all the way and the driver stopping wherever people wanted to be set down on their way home. Use it or lose it we said so we have vowed to get the bus more regularly. It was like a social event. The upside was that we found the post office and some fantastic os market stalls and a great big wilkinsons and a 99p shop, that was amazing for value. It isn`t a posh town but was very enjoyable, if we want posh then we simply get the bus the other way. There is only one available bus through the village and it really is a lifeline for some
I`m thinking about trying the freezing potatoes thing, I have never in my life frozen them before. I am going to put lots of baking potatoes in the oven and freeze a few whole as recommended here and I am also going to make potato boats with cheese, butter and pepper and I`ll open freeze them first. I got a smashing delivery from the local food group on the net, including a litre of buttermilk. I know it lasts a couple of weeks but I think I`ll look into freezing portions as I still have several buttermilk scones in my freezer. Ooh I think I`ll make cream teas this afternoon as it is that sort of weather today
I`m always looking at the weather forcast re my washing and it is so warm here in my little protected garden but even yesterday I quickly got 2 loads out by 9.30 and brought them in slightly damp at 3, so that is just a small window for drying for all of us and even less up north. Pretty difficult for those with lots of washing. One of my best methods, when our children were small, was under a car port, tumble driers weren`t commonplace then and anyway we couldn`t have afforded to use one
I am really enjoying reading your posts on here lately, especially the ones about fires and banking up etc but what you are having to pay for coal now is horrifying0 -
Just been lurking on a weather forum that interests me, we have the high possibility of a bad storm with high winds and lots of rain Sun/Mon might be worth making sure everything is all tied down and tickety-boo.

Especially if you live in a windy area and have one of those little plastic four-shelved greenhouses! Having learned the hard way and had ours blown over one Spring when it was full of all my veggie seedlings, we now strap ours around with a long nylon luggage strap which is fitted into two bolts drilled into the house wall. It works a treat, even on really gusty days. But we've now dismanted ours for the winter as the covers aren't particularly frost proof and deteriorate rapidly & tear when they get hard and cold.0 -
That's why I dont have one Primrose, its far too windy up here. Our shed roof went last week and he spent all yesterday up a ladder swearing
One plus with a coal-fired stove is that it dries washing like nobody's business. I am tempted to get rid of the tumble dryer because I never ever use it.
TY C and smiley, am sick of knitting and have already done herbs.. but was already planning a new herb plot for next summer.
Our village has only one bus but its on a main road and runs from Carlisle to Edinburgh, so not local really. We used to have a wee postbus but I think its gone now.0 -
Trouble is, I need a hobby or interest and I havent got one...
can I pack my dd (10) off for a couple of hours so you can teach her to knit??? She is driving me crazy! I sit show her,,leave her then its mum, mum mum mum mum' i sort it and count the stitches she adds soooo many each time she does a row! I can only cast on and do straight forward knitting (cant remember anything else) but she doesnt give me a moments peace :rotfl:
I cast on 25 stiches and by time she finished about 20 rows she had about 48 stitches!!
I may help her knit a large scarf and tell her its one to cover her mouth and neck to keep cold out !!! Maybe some peace then!Life happens when you are busy making other plans
