We're off to an Antiques Fair. And will visit a few charity shops, looking for bargains. :j

Oh sorry for laughing Sammy, but it sounded funny! Hope you are all better soon. The duvet and cuppa sounds like a great idea.
Do any of you celebrate Guy Fawkes/Bonfire Night? Was just curious cos my Dad was English and I know he celebrated it when he was a boy. There were no sweeties but homemade treats and a bonfire. I did wonder if Halloween had taken over since it seems the shops are pushing it.. they can make more money out of it, I guess.Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

Lots of Hallowe'en celebrations here Nuala, although its probably a bit bigger in England than up here, but we have public firework displays etc. We are off to the big one in Glasgow tonight, I have my ear muffs looked outIt's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Think I will need to wrap up warm, I have ear muffs a hat, a coat and a shawl and gloves, do you think that's enough? It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Glad I didn't shell out for fireworks ticket to the school display. Just had an email that it's going ahead but will be scaled back because of the firemens' strike. I normally love fireworks but DD2 is too old to go with us and not yet old enough for a whole group of them to go with boyfriends so she's not bothered about going this year.
We normally go up to London to see the fireworks at the end of the Lord Mayor's show. If you go to Cannon St or Blackfriars you can stand on the platform near the river and get a really good view. Though Blackfriars is being rebuilt so not so easy this year. But it's academic as we can't go this year anyway as DD2 has a party (and DD1 is away at uni).
Can't wait for grandbabies - I used to so love seeing their little faces alight with excitement and now it's not coolIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Jinny- try thinking about investing in a couple of halogen heaters. They're cheap to buy, kick out a heck of a lot of heat and are cheap to run.
Hi minihauk, nice to meet you
re budgeting, I find it helpful to discuss this with my friends (not acquantances) and we all share ideas etc, its also helpful as we have created a safe haven to let of steam when things are'nt going so well. Also, I make a point of sorting the weekly finances out in front of my dd2 so that she can see just how much money we have and how far it has to stretch. This is helpful as she will always ask of we have any money before she asks for things and more importantly is much more accepting of the word no than most of my friends children. Fortunately she is'nt in to the latest fashion items or must haves and can't see the point of them (yet).
I'm going to comment page by page by the way as have lots to catch up on.The problem with common sense is its not very common:rotfl:

Thank you all for the warm welcome!
SK - hope you are all better soon.
I am not a fan or fireworks - my mum got one in her eye when she was small - it put me off, and DD is scared of them too.
I am happy to be a singleton, too. Got divorced when DS and DD were 4 and 2, they are now 30 and 28 - eeek, that is a loooong time ago! Very happy as I am, and don't think I could share with anyone on a permanent basis anymore. I like my own space too much.
Best wishes to all, and <<<<hugs>>>> to all that need/want them.0 -
Re budgeting When I was bringing up my 6 children single handed (divorced at time) I sat them all down ( the ones who could understand) and said"Mum doesn't have a lot of money, and I will have to be very careful with what I spend, but I will always love you all and will always be there for you and love is so important especially in a family" They were used to seeing me sit at the table on the night before I was paid and watched me budget for the coming week. Bless them they never asked for anything, not even when the ice cream man came round. Only one of them all adults now and in homes of their own is not good with finances. Children learn what they live.Do a little kindness every day.;)0
