Great news! I wasn't sure if it was a national or local thing when I heard about mine but I'm really pleased to hear that you've been renewed as well! :)

Hi Roseanna, I was made redundant this year and still feel a bit down. I had a weird dream that I was at a works Christmas do but it was only for the people who had been made redundant!! I went almost straight away into being a carer so didn't have a chance to 'grieve' if you know what I mean!

lol me too! After boxing some up for my sis, and filling some storage jars I have been making fat balls for the birds. Really easy - 1/3 suet and 2/3 unsalted nuts/ seeds/dry porridge oats/ cruched cereal/ dried fruit - no need to melt the fat just mould it in your hands into balls and chill in fridge. I will freeze some of the suet and also make my own mincemeat. Still have loads left though!:rotfl:

I got the suet too - have worked out it will make at least 84 pie crusts! Good job we eat lots of dumplings and suet pastry in this house, will also make some mincemeat too and some good old fashioned steamed suet puddings to fill us up nicely in the winter. Good idea about the fat balls for the birds, if it's a winter anywhere near like the last one they will really apreciate it, thanks Catznine.
  • A Big Thanks to all of you for you helpful, useful and supportive replies.

I realise it's going to be a question of allowing whatever time is needed to adjust to my new life. I'm already getting involved with quite a few different things. Today was a very different kettle of fish.
Taking some of the evidence based advice I used to give my mums in dealing with feeling depressed i.e that exercise does a great deal to help I went on one of the led health Walks in my local area.

Natural England website will indicate where these walks are anywhere in the country. The leaders are trained in First Aid, obviously where the routes are and it's free to participants.

My local scheme is called 'Walking the Way to Health' They cater for 1-3 mile walks and have some suitable for wheelchair, walking frame and pushchair users as well. It's a great way to get out and meet people. I do 2-3 miles strapped up with knee braces, Alpine walking boots, orthotics and two poles but at least I get out at least once a week with the groups, in addition to my solitary exercise the rest of the week.

It was a lovely sunny morning and walking for an hour in good company, meeting yet more new people was stimulating. It certainly lifted my spirits so I decided to get go and buy the ingredients I haven't got for Mary Berry's Christmas Chutney'

This is a recipe I found on the BBC Good Food website which went down so well with family and friends last Christmas I'm now getting requests for more this year!

The chutney is a lovely red colour, which has a Christmassy appeal especially when the jars are decorated seasonally. I've tried other recipes but this one being a winner I've made 12 1/2 jars today.
Always seem to get a half jar- for our use of course. More batches to do but all that chopping and stirring to the strains of Mama Mia( How sad !!) certainly kept me occupied and moving for most of the afternoon. Not quite worked out cost per jar yet but I did say we're growing into the frugal lifestyle....

If your baby has thrush and you are living miles from the clinic/ have problems getting there etc it's quite in order to call your health visitor for advice. She should be what is called a nurse prescriber- I was during my H/V career- and should be able to prescribe you an anti fungal cream. She'll need to see baby's bottom, of course , but can you not ask her to drop in , rearrange her visits so she can pop in. It's not something you'd request every time obviously but if the situation is difficult for you it does save you time having to trek up to and wait at your GP's surgery.

It's possible that I spoilt my clients in the days before everything was cut back to the bone but if a mum rang me as tired and worn out as you sound in your posts I'd do my best to make life easier for her. Some of our mums lived the opposite side of town and either walked or had to use 2 or 3 buses which was ridiculous.

How accessible is your h/v? The other suggestion can be to meet her at your nearest children's centre which we started doing before I retired where branch clinics were held.

If these are run by nursery nurses they cannot prescribe. It's the H/V you need for that purpose. I know things are changing rapidly in different parts of the country but it's OK to remember thay YOU are the service user and a polite telephone call for a bit of service isn't out of order!

Good luck and I hope thing improve soon

We always include some suet pellets in the food we put out on the bird table. They love it, especially in cold frosty weather where small birds need to eat their body weight every day merely to survive.
We too are still eating the last of our fresh home grown ripening tomatoes. Some of them are looking a little crinkled now but I cooked some of them in a minestrone soup earlier this week and I'm planning to use some more in a beef stew this week-end. It's such a shame to waste them and nobody can see the wrinkles when they're cooked down. I'm now desperate to free up some space in our kitchen & garage freezers, filled to the brim with this summer's home grown crops so that I can do some batch cooking of stews and caseroles to save on fuel costs. My frustration is that they don't seem to run down quickly enough but it's made me realise how economical we must have become over time in some of our daily eating habits.
