Hi everyone - I've been lurking and not posting for the last few days due to having horrid heavy cold and generally feeling sorry for myself
...although I do love reading the thread nonetheless.
Have been taking my homemade elderberry and clove cough medicine to get rid of the dry tickly cough and soothe my throat so I guess thats pretty OS.
Good news today - I have got through to interview for one of the jobs that I applied for...but even better I have had my contact at my present job renewed for another 6 months this afternoonI instantly felt stones lighter when I was told - so pleased to know that I've got through the selection process and ... relieved that we can afford to keep (reasonably) warm this winter!
Also...small pleasures ..the feral kittens we have been feeding all summer - the biggest bravest one has actually let me pick him up today for a cuddle (it was fab to know that he trusts me)...although his siblings are still too shy to be touched, they come really close now to eat...so I'm working on them
Still chomping our way through our home grown tomatoes - I was told to put the green ones in a drawer to ripen ....and lo and behold - they are doing - haven't bought tomatoes for months now so well pleased with the investment of 6 x 80p tomato plants and a couple of supercheapo grow bags:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls

Good evening
Well, home today after my 4th early shift, and have a banging headache and feel a bit bleugh. Not helped by the OH teling me I looked like a bag of spuds and should get back to the gym :O
On the up side though, there was a letter waiting for me when I got back, inviting me for interview at one of the places I had a brilliant placement last year. I'm still in contact with my mentor from there, and am quite excited!
So, things are a bit better since I last posted (or they at least feel it), and it's my last early shift tomorrow, then 2 days off. I've only got 3 weeks left of my placement, and then it's sleeping time!
Oh, and on the subject of alcohol, I don't drink very much at all, and am probably the only one in my family who doesn't drink. The thing is, my older brother is an alcoholic and I had some bad experiences with him when I was younger and I think that's affected how I view drinking. I prefer a cold soft drink, and to stay in control!
Finally, woodburners. We've got a Danish one; Morso, which heats the majority of the house and we can keep it going for a month if we use oak or other hardwoods which are seasoned. Typically, we pay £150 for a huuuuge load of hardwood logs which lasts us from October to March. We also had a liner put in in order to stop smoke damage on the walls. If I recall correctly, it cost us £1000 all in 8 years ago, but the stove was tremendously expensive because of the make.
Sorry for the long post.

Not too sure on that one (I think there is a thread on the celebrations board about home made chocs....

We are very lucky to have a farming contact that will sell us 1/2 a lamb, butchered for about £40.... Nice big leg of lamb for the others on xmas day (I'm veggie - so I shall have to think about that for me!!)

Mince pies freeze really well raw - that is make them in the tray and then pop them in the freezer before you cook them, once they are frozen you can take them out of the tray for a bit more space and to do another batch. I am going to defrost my freezer and then start doing a few batches here and there until xmas. Once you want to eat them, simply pop them in the oven from frozen.... works every time for me.
need to tackle the 20bags of green gage plums taking up too much space. Any ideas welcome hubbys moaning a lot!
OOh - greengage jam for xmas pressies.... I;m sure you could probably make some liquers or chutneys too - saves buying other ingredients!!

Not sure about wine (never made it) but you should be able to make some elderflower champagne easily enough.... you will probably need to add some yeast to get it going though as the flowers have been frozen.... or even some nice cordial to give as gifts....

Suet freezes very successfully. You can then grate it straight from frozen (if it isn't already grated). Or you could make up a load of dumplings to freeze ready to drop straight into your casseroles over the winter! Also very nice in pastry and puddings - I'm sure you know all this already. 12.5kg is more than you would expect to use in a normal, domestic kitchen perhaps :rotfl: - but that is what freezers are for...0
