Sammy - ignore her, as long as baby is happy and healthy you know you are doing the right thing, no child should be left screaming with hunger - thats cruelty. DS6 was huge as a baby - was wearing 12-18m clothes when he was 3 months but has settled down now to average size, kids grow at different times and rates, those charts are based on averages - which make them not very helpful, maths uses average to work with predictability - ie there are so many average then so many above and below, whereas in life kids are unpredictble, I had a very badly managed second pregnancy because my consultant didnt understand that for every chart there was an average but that automatically meant that for the average to remain at that point there had to be people at the top of the scale and below it too, or that there was always going to be people who fell outside the charts areas too. I studied maths at degree level and spent many appointments trying to explain it to him!!
I would also seriously consider contacting her supervisor and complaining.

NOt very Os here today - dryer on cos its raining again, heating been on this morning already. Had to throw away a full packet of bacon that had split open and not been noticed so has gone off :mad::mad:, now having to wait for anothe pkt to defrost so I can get SC on with dinner for this evening.
Bit of a lazy day as I really cant be bothered doing much, gonna have lunch soon then settle on sofa with duvet and kids for TV afternoon. :)
  • Ooh, Kidcat a duvet day , sounds lovely, might copy you. Sammy agree with above comments, your HV sounds like a nightmare, has she got kids of her own? You are a very good Mum, don't be undermined by this woman xx

    Hi Sammy,

I wouldn't worry TBH, Holly sound like a lovely healthy baby. I am often dubious about the opinions of HVs, I fell out with them and stopped going for anything other than the occasional weigh when one of the HVs at our clinic told me how I ought to be making up bottles for my DD. I pointed out (politely I may add though I didn't feel like it), that this method was against all health and hygiene guidelines that I followed when I ran a small tearoom as the temperatures she was suggesting were not adequately high to kill anything. Her reply? "Well you're not in a professional kitchen you can do it this way!" Erm NO I'm not about to use less safe methods with my tiny vulnerable child that I had to use for grown and healthy customers. I often think they follow guidelines blindly without actually engaing brain and I'm far more inclined to rely on my own instincts and knowledge that some jobsworth. You always sound to me like you have good solid instincts and plenty of knowledge so give yourself credit and you'll all be fine.
  • Sammy Kaye, the above posters are right! Go with your mother's instinct every time! I've also found that what men know about babies, you could write on the back of a postage stamp!!

Whilst I am a welshie and I do agree that there are jobs there if people need/want to get them its whether they can be bothered to go sometimes things really aren't so simple. I mean I keep getting job applications suggested to me that are in Cardiff but for me to get to Cardiff in time to start work at 9am - I would have to leave my flat at 7am, to get a bus at 7.20, to run to the train station for 7.40 (hoping I didnt miss the train at 7.48) to be in Cardiff for 8.22 provided there was no travel restrictions, traffic or leaves on the line etc and that would cost me £30 a week just for the train ticket -- not taking into account I'd need bus travel @ £3.90 for a day return ticket to get me to the train station in the first place! So that's easily approx £55 a week just in travel fees alone.
Whereas Swansea would cost me the bus fare and £15 a week which would be £39 a week.
Some people unfortunately don't see it as being worth their while to go to work in a minimum wage part time job when travel alone eats up most of it. :(
Anyway thats my view on that...............:p

I don't mean to offend anyone, but I'm writing this as someone who's moved away from family for education and job purposes and has no chance of ever moving back to near my family as there just aren't any jobs there (as well as my husband is from another part of the country)

I don't really see leaving the house at 7am for work as any particular hardship or unusual - millions of people do it every day, and many people have much worse commutes. And if you're doing it every day, you'll save money by getting a season tickets and employers can do interest free season ticket loans to help spread the cost. If people aren't taking jobs because they might have to get up early or because they don't fancy dealing with a commute, I despair, I really do!

There are plenty of people on here who've done awful commutes, made do and mend until they're fed up to the back teeth and made every last crumb of food go as far as it possibly can. You do what you have to to keep your head above water. I don't think it's in any way unreasonable for people have to travel to get to work or get a job, so I totally agree with IDS.

As I said, I didn't mean to offend anyone, but having been there and got the tee shirt with regards to moving for jobs/work/life in general, it's not that bad!
  • I think though that in sammy's particular case, she is thinking about her two young children, and what leaving at that time for work would mean in terms of practicalities, it also takes a lot of time out of your day as a parent, that could/should be spent with your child.

Hubby leaves the house at 6 to get to the station by 6:30, gets to work at 7:30 for an 8am start, the later train gets him there at 8:15 which is too late, he leaves work at 4 & is usually home between 5 & 6. His fares are nearly £40 a week plus my petrol on top of that. At the end of the day we're glad he has a job.

Lovelife, I would definitely use the Stilton if there was obvious wrong with it. Sometimes the texture suffers a bit when cut cheese gets older so I might use it to cook with rather than just scoff. Maybe in a tart or something?

for those stressing about buying Christmas presents, I just spotted this thread over on the Celebrations board, looks like a good site for stocking fillers and bits that wont break the bank. I really like the cotton bags that can be decorated or the ones to colour in ;)
Thank you Rosie, that has lots of lovely stuff like we used to get in our stockings.

It's a lovely sunny autumn day here. Will head out later to buy a few essentials with a Mr T voucher from surveys. I'm well-chuffed with that plus I got my toiletries for free the other day using Boots points. :j

Hope everyone is ok and has a nice Saturday. :)
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)

  • ifonlyitwaseasier - I know from where I work that there are an awful lot of applications for every job but TBH the greatest majority will be very poor standard -thin grubby looking paper, illegible handwriting, poor spelling and grammatical mistakes are frequent and from some cv's that are sent in - the applicant obviously hasn't bother to read the job description; for example if the job specifies 'must have driving licence with no endorsements' it means exactly that but it won't stop lots of non drivers or drivers with points applying!

To give yourself the best possible chance - you need a concisely set out CV on good quality white paper - check spelling and grammar and send with a covering letter which you can use to go into detail about how you match their person specification and whenever possible give examples of when you have done that kind of work (rather than just state that you have!)

Has your Jobcentre given you one of the A4 green booklets?? 'Jobkits' - these are free and give lots a good tips and examples of how to set out your cv and write covering letters etc.

It is really tough and competitive - but with a bit of presentation, you can make your cv stand out from the others :)

For application forms - always use black ink - most app forms will say 'complete in black ink' - complete it in blue ink and it will be straight in the bin at the first sift regardless of how good your qualifications/experienceis!!

Hope this is helpful - now back to scanning what on offer and writing my shopping list around this weeks bargains :)

    thanks Charlies-aunt

i have my CV polished by my dad as he has been hiring for many many years, am registered with almost every agency around here (just not the hgv driving one!!) and have my app with JCP this week coming so will have the booklet after that.

i will get thro this and we will survive, :D

My OH often leaves the house at 6 and doesn't get back till 7. And has been spending £500 a month on his commute. It has been worth as it's not a minimum wage job.

But if I had to spend £50 a week on fares to go to a minimum wage job and faced a long commute would it really be sensible? If that leaves you in a situation where you can't pay the bills or spend any time with your children should you really be demonised? It's seen as admirable to work yourself to the bone for !!!!all money and never see your family. Why should we applaud that? Slaves probably had it better.

Remember those old mining communities being talked about were once proud working towns, and people there fought for the right to work. They had the fight knocked out of them by Thatcher and we are now reaping the consequences with a generation of people who really can't be arsed because the working tradition of their families and communities was utterly destroyed.
