I was wondering where he was as well C, not seen him for ages and hope he's ok. I went round Sainsbugs last night without my glasses and had to shove my nose right on the shelves to check the prices. I nit-picked and swapped so often that the RV almost went back to the car for a sit down. Now trying to think of the most delicious and exciting thing to do with a reduced cabbage :rotfl:
  • I spoke to DD last night & it is possible the fosterchildren will still be with her for Christmas, so the knitting needles are out & I'm knitting them each a scarf, if they leave before hand, they can have a scarf each as a goodbye present.

    Morning all!

Well it was payday yesterday (FINALLY) so hurried about doing Nettos and other MSE things. Bought DD "big girl pants" to keep up the toilet training and save on nappies when we are at home (not quite ready to risk a nappy-free outing yet. She looks so cute in knickers, I love it! And only had one accident so far, bless her.

Unfortunately a pattern is emerging of doing mse shopping and then OH feels the need to have a drinkies, then feels the need to smoke, which isn't very mse at all. Then because he has smoked he needs nicotine patches. I'm sure he has been on patches for a year now! It's just ridiculous, I'm hating the financial and health impact. Of course I end up having a few drinks too and a ciggie or three.

Couldn't really have a go as he's been waiting all week to have his "redundancy drink" lol, but to be honest there's always a reason - a rubbish week, a great week, boredom, etc. I'm bad for having a drink at the same time of course, but I don't drink as much by a mile.

He's a lovely man, and a great father and husband but really struggles with this issue. And now I think I am struggling a bit with it too! Perhaps losing the extra income is going to be a help in the long run as we simply won't have enough money to spend on this idiocy! We are going to see old friends tonight too, so that will be a fairly alcoholic evening.

And then we will probably sit down on monday and wonder where all our money has gone! Aaaargh!

Has anybody seen the report on Sky News about Iain Duncan Smith's comments on the jobless ? O god I am SO mad!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Mr Duncan Smith told the BBC: "The truth is there are jobs. They may not be absolutely in the town you are living in. They may be in a neighbouring town."
Jobless people in places such as Merhyr Tydfil in south Wales, where one third receive some sort of unemployment handout, "didn't know if they got on the bus an hour's journey they'd be in Cardiff and they could look for the job there," he said.

I bet they know the cost of the damn busfares though ! And that if they get offered a job at £120 a week and the fares take £60 then they're stuffed

Morning everyone, and what a lovely morning it is here, too! (I don't think it's gonna last, forecast to rain later, but hey ho)

So here I am, sat in front of the computer AGAIN for a fun-filled day of (unpaid) work. Hooray! :j Let's hope I get more done than I did on Thursday. However, on Thurs night having a minor breakdown over the state of the house, I had a 3-hour blitz, so today I'm sitting at a lovely clear kitchen table, and everything is nice and clean and conducive of a good days' work! :p

Dropped DH at work first thing this morning, and then popped into the 24-hr Tesco on my way home to pick up a few bits for dinner tonight (got friends coming over). My god Tesco is expensive these days! I only ever go to Asda or the market for my regular shopping, plus the Coop for offers and Waitrose for reduced stuff. Couldn't believe that it cost me over a tenner for some lasagne sheets, a garlic loaf (not OS but no time to make one!) and some veg (making a roasted vegetable lasagne). I was most put out, but really didn't have time to mess around later going to other shops.

Really really chuffed - DH and I have been scrimping and saving for the last two years, not necessarily because we have to (thankfully - and I appreciate that we're very fortunate for that), but because we are determined to pay off as much of our mortgage as we can, whilst interest rates are low. We just came to the end of a 2-year "deal", which meant we are now free to pay off as much as we like, and we were able to pay off a nice big chunk that we had saved :D I hope noone minds me saying that, cos I don't want to sound like I'm boasting or anything given that some people are struggling so much more, but I just wanted to share with someone (don't really like talking about money in RL!) I know people like us who have a mortgage, with similar incomings etc, who haven't been overpaying at all whilst the rates are low, but are just making the most of having extra money to spend....I think that's very silly, if you ask me...what goes down, must go up after all!!

I have a laundry mountain here, but reluctant to put any washing on because it's going to rain, and it's not cold enough to put the heating on....running out of clean pants though!

Ooh ooh, excitement, made some gorgeous chocolate and banana cupcakes last night using a couple of manky bananas :T Was chuffed because I'm not that great at baking. Also they were good because they didn't involve using real chocolate, only cocoa powder, so weren't as expensive as choc cakes can be. That's pudding for tonight sorted - cake and a nice cup of tea :p

    Have a nice day everyone

  • Just realised the last few pages with a tinge of anxiety as my thanks button had dissappeared!! Now realised somehow i have been logged out duh!! Forgive me if i don't go back, but just wanted to say thanks to all for some really useful posts.

Gailey you are amazing girl, just reading your posts make me dizzy:)

Hope you are feeling a bit brighter today Mardatha, feel like i've got a touch of the blues myself today!! I know it's hormonal, because nothings changed in my life, but feel on the verge of tears all the time.... so i am going be very kind to myself and go with the flow, do what i can and try not to worry about things i can't change.

Just taken a pack of mince out the freezer and will make a Spag Bol, shepherds pie and chili later. I find cooking very therapeutic these days, funny really, I hated it when i had money, because i had no time and it just felt like another pressure.

Have found an unopened pack of Blue Stilton in the fridge, dated 5th October, not sure whether it will still be ok, sniff test not really applicable cos it stinks any way, any suggestions?

Daughters BF bought it over last week, lol, he comes from a very OS family, and arrives at the weekend bearing gifts of reduced food !! He says he always knows what's on offer at the supermarkets, because me and his Mam always have it in stock at the same time:rotfl:

Damp and wet here today, i have been noticing when i get into bed at night that the bedding is a touch damp, think i might invest in an electric blanket this winter, need to research this, have no idea what they cost, will do this later. Also need to get some safety pins as have fleeces to pin onto the insides of curtains. Have the heating on every day now, but on the lowest setting, our fire is a gas coal, found out it is expensive and inefficient so we are not using it any more, wish i could afford to have it ripped out and a log burning stove put in...dream on!!!

for those stressing about buying Christmas presents, I just spotted this thread over on the Celebrations board, looks like a good site for stocking fillers and bits that wont break the bank. I really like the cotton bags that can be decorated or the ones to colour in ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

I agree with IDS on this one. Merthyr has a benefits culture and has had one since the mines closed and people were no way going to move away from their families and it has passed down through the generations. If people can get a job in Merthyr then it will be at the minimum wage and probably part time. Cardiff has a thriving new shopping centre and it is just a quick train ride away. Many many people from the merthyr just don`t have aspirations and can see no way out of their black hole even though money from europe has been thrown at the area. The dependency culture is so strong there that individuals need very strong will power to break away
