Speaking for myself, I love following both this thread and the really old style thread and I would be very sorry if they got subsumed into the daily chat thread. I remember some fairly heated exchanges in the past from people who didn't see things from the same perspective and implied stocking up in case of hard times to come was a selfish and/or ridiculous thing to do. (Kittie, you must remember that!!!). I think the titles of these threads attracts people who largely share the same perspective on how to tackle the increasingly tough environment we find ourselves in and that keeps the thread pretty harmonious on the whole - the way we all agreed to disagree yesterday was a good example. I think we would be swamped in the general daily chat thread and people who gain from the support and advice on these threads - in among the chat - would not feel so comfortable
My feeling is that some of us had to <cough> "work" pretty darn hard at getting a "Times are tough" thread in the first place. It IS a very distinct "entity" in its own right and very useful. MY own personal feeling is that I sometimes personally get a bit frustrated when "daily" type chat comes in - but I have to accept that some of the other "regulars" like things that way and it will then "wander back" to the "Times are Hard" theme it started on.
As some of us HAVE had to work so hard to get the "Times are tough" threads accepted - despite them being Old Style thinking par excellence IMHO - it would be a huge shame if they now came to an end (which IS what WOULD happen of a certainty if they "got mixed in with the Daily Thread")...I've "operated in political environments" of one description or another for so long by now that I know that would happen...:(0 -

Well for example he prices tins of tomatoes at 44p whereas I get them for 31p in Lidl. And he priced 8 good sausages at £3.30 whereas there are often offers on these and I stick them in the freezerIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

Socks drive me mad always go tatty always lost.
i have 2draws one for matched one for odds in hope that one day they find their pair.
...and I'm a "tatty 'erb" anyway most of the time - so I just figure that if I've ended up with one navy blue sock and one black one - what the heck - they're hidden by my jeans/leggings/trousers and footwear anyway...:rotfl:0 -

Not that bothered about my appearance....possibly a bit scruffy..in my case = mind on other things...:rotfl:
I CAN do elegant and have had compliments before now about looking elegant - but its gotta be worth the effort in my book...:D. I would say "doing elegant" costs money - like a £200 touch for a dress...<cough>....and nope I havent got any clothes in that price range...but I DO have a dress that is very elegant that cost me I think I recall about £30-£35 - so I know I've got something I can haul out if I have to do a "wash and brush up"...0 -

Ceridwen Your post has puzzled me a little bit. This is probably just my memory failing me, but can you remind me in what way you and others had to "work" pretty darn hard at getting a "Times are tough" thread in the first place? Sorry if that's a daft question, but I have no memory of it at all and I'm genuinely interested.
We had a 'free-ish' tea tonight...carrot and corriander soup for a starter (carrots and corriander from the garden/greenhouse) with homemade crusty bread, then homegrown salad with crab cakes made from leftover mash from last night mixed hg chillies, parsley and a tin of crabmeat that I found when doing a clearout. It was bb 2008. So much better for us and tastier than the takeaway we used to treat ourselves to on a Friday night before we started to tighten our belts.

Hmmm....many of the details are eluding my memory at present...but it DID feel eerr.....not easy...sometimes....
Some of the concepts of the "Times are Hard" thinking are now pretty much accepted as standard "Old Style" thinking...but the one about being well stocked-up for instance even did have some <cough> discussion going about it. I think that one, for instance, has now been pretty much accepted as a Good Idea.
Thats the first thought that comes to my mind on this...I'm guessing Kittie might like to come in on this and add a few things and there may be others.
Anyways...notta lotta point in revisiting old ground now methinks. Many people are obviously finding the "Times are Hard" threads very valuable and so - in modern day parlance - "Its all good:D".0 -

£200 for a dress! Not likely! I know some people who can achieve elegance on a Primark budget but I've never been able to pull it off. My Mum was beautifully elegant in her day but I didn't get that gene. Just as well I'm quite content to scruff around comfortably.
I have felt lousy all day but a cheese and onion sandwich and a giant mug of tea just cheered me up. Sometimes simple pleasures are the best. Am watching Snowdonia 1890 and realising what tough is really like.
Hope everyone is doing ok, hugs to anyone who isn't. I feel a bit paranoid about what is ok to post here but am taking my chances, no disobedience intended.Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

Feeling a little down today as it seems everyone I know is getting interviews and jobs, and I'm currently struggling to even get an interview at the moment. It doesn't help that we're all going for the same jobs as there are so few out there.
I just really feel useless at the moment; I messed up my last interview, and haven't heard back from any of the others I've applied for. It's making me wonder whether I've wasted the last three years TBH.
I'm still ill too, so that's not helping my mood. The OH is away at present, and the dog has ripped one of her pads open and may need to go to the vets; another expense I could do without.
Apart from that, I was bought lunch today by a friend, so that was nice

Sorry you have been feeling down about things on the job front, however it is perfectly understandable. I think it is a sign of the times (post CSR) that many, many people will soon be in the same position (out of work) and the demand for jobs so great that there will be many hundreds (if not thousands) of applicants for a single job.
Hope you soon start feeling betterGrocery Challenge for October: £135/£200
