I can't remember where I bought my darning mushroom. I don't remember if I've ever darned with it! I think I had a go once but I tend to just gather stuff up with blanket stitch instead, it's easier! I remember my tights gradually getting shorter and shorter when I was younger as I kept going through the toes!0

I bought a darning mushroom from ebay a couple of years ago; I'm no expert but this is how I do it - wool of similar thickness and colour, plus darning needle with a big enough eye to take the yarn - a couple of rows of running stitch all around the hole and then do stitches across from top to bottom and side to side, like a basket weave; don't pull the hole up too much or it will bunch and be uncomfortable to walk on; I would darn a hole in a sweater in the same way... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I've got my grandmother's darning mushroom - it's at least 100 years old, because my mother was born in 1910 so my grandmother would have been darning husband's socks by then. I'm fairly sure my mother didn't use it much though - domesticated she wasn't!! It gives me a real feeling of connection with my grandmother when I use it to fix moth holes in DH's jumpers (sorry, jerseys - jumpers are for girls, he keeps telling me). Glad I don't have to darn socks though. He buys M&S lambswool in navy every time so no problems matching. It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Another way of "darning" wool socks - especially if you have gone to the trouble of hand knitting them is to needlefelt them - but probably only any use to someone who already needle felts but might not have thought of it as you need special barbed needles/some kind of foam block etc.
I have mended two pairs of torn jeans today. For DDs skinny jeans I used a piece of printed cotton (thinnner then denim) and "glued" it behind the rip with invisible mending powder (Kle..neze Supermend) as DD didn't want any stitches to show - gone for a fashionably distressed look! Could also use wonderweb or bondaweb if you have it but small drum of supermend lasts for ever - and I use it for all sorts of creative things too - put a few grains on with an old paintbrush and press - just DON'T get it on your iron or ironing board (use baking parchment to protect both) or it will transfer to other things and cost you money instead of saving it! For OH's work jeans I glued a patch of denim behind the hole in the same way and then darned over it with the sewing machine for extra strength.Jan 2011 GC £300/£150.79 (2 adults, 2 teens, working dog, includes food/cleaning/toiletries)0 -
If you've got, or can get hold of Copydex glue, you could always stick the patches on with that. I've only ever used it for making costumes for school plays but I don't see why you couldn't use it on jeans etc.Say what you mean.. mean what you say... without being mean.0

I have a wooden darning mushroom that was my mothers as it has her name on it, I was surprised when I came across it as my mother was not the darning type, more the gin & tonic type. When I looked at the mushroom I realised it had her maiden name on & was hers from school.
