Craftyscholar wrote: »KNOW YOUR ENEMY
If you’ve ever had any of the following thoughts, feelings, or experiences in the course of trying to do or get what you want, you have met fear.
An overwhelming desire to sleep: you’re suddenly so tired
An overwhelming desire to eat: you’re suddenly famished
An overwhelming attraction to the paperback rack: you must read Love’s Tender Fury or the latest Travis McGee mystery now
The soothing thought, “I’ve got plenty of time. It can wait till tomorrow.”
A suddenly blank mind: you were fermenting with plans and ideas, now you’re the Village Idiot
A sudden ferment of plans and ideas about eighteen other dreams you’d rather have first, before this one (“Gee, I’ve never been to Europe . . . I can always start my business when I get back.”)
A sudden loss of interest in your goal: it fascinated you in theory, but in reality it’s boring, not for you at all (NOTE: Hidden fear will try to trick you into changing your goal whenever it starts getting challenging. That’s why so many of us have picked up and dropped so many activities—not because we’re “dilettantes” who can’t make up our minds.)
A sudden conviction that you don’t have what it takes for this goal (“Whatever made me think I was aggressive enough for a job in sales? I’m really a very shy, retiring person.”)
(Wishcraft - Barbara Sher)
Off to read some more and give myself a shake. Oh and have a look at Firewalker's thread.
Crafty this feels like it was written directly for meI can relate to so much of that  I think I will have a look at this on Amazon or check the library.
I'm glad your opinion was welcomed and glad you felt able to speak up and therefore contimue to join in without feeling like you are going against the grain.0 -

FW - Sunday is probably IKEAs busiest day. Be prepared for queues at the tills - or decide what you want beforehand and go late. If you don't like crowds and faffing about, I think you can order on-line and get them to deliver (I have a vague recollection that they will deliver lots of items for the same delivery charge).
Alternatively, go after work when it is quieter.0 -
Lovely! Craftyscholar, see what you sparked - exactly what Firewalker is describing, in fact, that the discord you were worried about, and had experienced on another thread, doesn't exist here. Result
Firewalker - I'm another one who wants to mention your writing - I didn't quite *get* it till today, but for some reason when you mentioned your thread above, today was the day, and like craftyscholar, I started on page one. I'm only at the end of page 3, and I have to break off now, I need to go back to bed and rest, but its absolutely beautiful. You should certainly write a book when the calling takes you - philosophy and life and money and identity and values and morals, they're all in there. Thank you!
I also checked out Barbara Sher, after craftyscholar mentioned her - thats another bookmark, and another site to read, I love what she said about the ways that we can reject things out of unconscious fear.
I think for me with The Secret (its not my bible btw), is the element of positivity, and the fact that all things are possible, and a lot of this is in the thead also. Everyone can take what works for them and share it. I'm quite a cynical person which is an elmentof myself that I dont like much. There's things in the book that people can relate to but its up to the individual to draw their own conclusions. Its a case of whatever works etc., No reason though for people not to be able to express an opinion. Its diversity of opinion that makes the world go round, it'd be pretty boring if we were all carbon copies. Different strokes for different folks.0 -

This discussion about the secret has me quite fascinated! I, too, doubt that you can get whatever you want just by asking, believing and visualising. The notion of "Ask and ye shall receive....." is written in The Bible - no, don't ask me for the reference, please - so it is not new.
I agree with those people who have pointed out that positive thinking, focussing and 'working' towards our wishes is possibly the secret of The Secret - if you get what I mean!!
The other thing I have experienced in my life is a change in what I want and what is important to me. In the past I would have wished far more for materialistic things, whereas now I am more inclined to want what I call "quality of life" things - contentedness, acceptance, health - both for myself and others - and time to care for and assimilate the beauty of the natural world. I feel more fulfilled by these things than I ever would (or did when things were going my way) by money or possessions.
The tendency to blame oneself for not believing strongly enough is very destructive. On the other hand if one believes in a higher entity one can reason that "it wouldn't be good for me", or "that isn't what is meant for me".
My mother used to get very cross with someone who always said "The Lord will provide". She thought it had little to do with the Lord, and everything to do with other people. In as much as we are all part of the universe, other people providing could be interpreted as the universe providing!!!!!!!!
Think I'd better stop now as I am probably spouting a lot of tosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!0
