So I've come to the conclusion that if the school doesn't have the time or the facilaties to make sure she is learning then I'm going to have to all that I can to help her and teach her using techniques that is more suited to her. At the moment it seems like a big hill to climb, but I wont fail her like the school seems to be.
Nothing has changed there, then. When my kids - now aged 35 and 39 - were given rote learning homework of spellings etc I asked one parents' evening what learning strategies the children were taught. I think they thought I had recently landed from Mars, asked me what exaclty I meant by 'learning strategies' and then said they didn't think it would be helpful.
Made it a deliberate policy to be as helpfullly critical as possible thereafter. Think I was their worst nightmare but I had fun and hopefully made them think.
I would have hoped they had moved on since then....but evidently not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -

All I can say then is thank goodness for learning strategies, because when I was at school (1963-1974) the only strategy was constant repetition. Learning was NOT fun. :eek:0 -
Ok, I am struggling to catch up with the thread so am just going to post my 50 day challenges
1. To only move house with things that I want to keep (currently have boxes from when I left 7 years ago that I am sorting through!)
2. To do pilates 3 times a week
3. To cycle to work at least once a week
4. To follow up publishing a case study I did for uni - and either start it or know that it can't be done.
5. To complete Australian Tax return and send to Accountant.
6. To have contacted UK and Aus Pension funds and started the process to get money from the UK one to Aus one!
Wow - seems a lot less ambitious than a lot of others but that's all I can think of for now!
Good luck to everyone!

I have a parent teacher meeting on friday, so I am going to go in armed with a list of questions on what their learning stratigies are. Although with one teacher for 30 kids someone is bound to be left behind.
Unfortunatley DD is also a negative person, if something is hard or she doesn't know how to do something yet, she will cry and say 'I cant do it, its too hard' and give up. So I have to have the patients of a saint.
Whe she's old enough I'll give her a copy of the secret:DLBM 04/10:j

Yep I know a marketing guru, he's actually the development director of a marketing company. Have e-mailed him and asked permission to give details. Can't promise he will, but he's one of life's good guys so fingers x'd.0 -
OH absoulutley MG, My poor DD is getting left behind in school and I'm trying to research different ways to teach her, including using your book MG:o
Yesterday she came home in tears after her teacher told her she needs to work quicker as shes getting left behind, but if she doesnt understand how is she supposed to keep up?
So I've come to the conclusion that if the school doesn't have the time or the facilaties to make sure she is learning then I'm going to have to all that I can to help her and teach her using techniques that is more suited to her. At the moment it seems like a big hill to climb, but I wont fail her like the school seems to be.
I could have written this too unfortunately.
My lad struggles to keep up, he cant write or copy things down quickly enough so often falls behind. This has led to him becoming quite a sad lad in the just over a year since he's been at high school. He comes home quite withdrawn and depressed really, and often has to hang back after school to clarify something with a teacher. i think he panics so much about getting things written down, he doesnt hear what's being said. It really does break my heart to see him struggle.
One thing that seems to be making matters much worse is having to study an additional language. For a dyslexic child who struggles to write and spell his home language, to suddenly have to learn French is just too much. He now confuses the spelling rules between the 2 languages, for example, he now spells geography as geographie.
MG, is the language course writing or speech based? If it's written, would it be possible to do the 100 high frequency English words for children like mine that struggle so much?Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches :think:Loves being a Wonderbra friend :kisses3:
