Marru, I second what Susan said... You have whittled down the options and now know what is possible and can move forward! Thats progress!
Positive(ish) Stroke story. My Mum had a full/major stroke 4 months ago, but recieved treatment straight away. They were in Majorca and and as theres an aging/retirement population there they had access to some special injection which can help with recovery if given within 3 hours.
When I flew out I was heart broken, she couldn't speak, sit up, eat, drink or move any part of her left side. They started her the second day on physio which was brutal. I hate to say it but I cried for the Mum I'd lost, I was 4 months pregnant at the time and was feeling selfish that she wouldn't be here to help me, and enjoy her Granddaughter.
We got her back to the UK after a month and the stroke association, GP & local authority were brilliant.
4 months on she is now 80% normal.(Fell over the other week and needed 10 stiches in her head!), she can walk short distances, even make a cup of tea, and her speech is great! I am so gratefull for all the wonderful people who have rallied around to help her.
Sorry for the long post, but wanted to say that there can be life after a stroke, and we are slowly adjusting to what can/can't be done.Right now I'm having amnesia and deja- vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before0 -
I'm really pleased she's doing so well Winky!!
She had hers on 20th July, so I think we're 13 weeks on... may be slightly wrong.
She has no physical effects at all - she can walk, write, do whatever you ask her to. She looks fine. Infact, just looking at her, you'd have no idea.
Physically even her speech is fine, if she reads the paper out loud, or sings, or repeats something someone else has said to her that is fine as well.
Her stroke was right at the front in the middle of her brain, and apparently, that's the bit which converts thoughts into speech. So frustratingly for her, she understands everything you say, she knows how she wants to reply, but she can't get the words out!!!! It would be driving me beserk! She can write down what she wants to say, but the speech terrorist is determined that she won't do that!
She is also very forgetful, they think she's damaged the bit which allows short term memory to process... i.e. she goes to make a cup of tea, and she forgets what she's done so far. She was making a sandwich, and forgot she'd already buttered the bread, so did some more - silly little things - which have meant they can't allow her to drive or return to work (which is all she wants to do. She had said that when she goes back to work, she's better!)
She has problem ordering things... so again back to the tea, she will pour the water in before she's boiled the kettle, or try to take the teabag out before she's put it in - again bad for driving!!
And, the pesky panic attacks. This is the hardest bit to deal with really, and has changed her so much... from the strong person she was before to the little old lady she's become. She's not that old - only 57, but she's more frail and withery than my gran who's 85It stops her trying to do things and makes her more miserable. They've got her on anti-depressants (a major side effect of strokes apparently) and the panic could be a bad reaction to those... so back to the Dr.
She also has to have an op to keep the artery on the right side of her face unblocked, and shes TERRIFIED about that... poor thing
Anyway - I'm taking her shopping tomorrow, so that'll be an adventure. See how it goes eh.0 -
Sorry didn't meant to make people cry - just thought MG's post was the best summary
Hugs to all those needing them.
I think I'm up to joining the 50 day challenge...although I'm currently torn at whether to buy a Wii - due to commuting and dark creeping it at 4pm I'm no longer happy to go running at night but really want to keep the exercise side of things up (one of my 50 day challenge) now their is a second hand bundle which I think is reasonable value for money all be it still quite expensive but I don't know whether to take the plunge...or to offer a cheeky offer for it and see what they say - help!2020 Mortgage-Free Wannabes #20 £1495.03/£2760 OP0 -
Morning,
Scottishlass, you did make me cry by reposting but it was a nice type of crying. I like things that move me to emotion. However yesterday whilst driving I was listening to Jeremy Vine and they were talking about the Trussletrust(?SP) which is a charity that gives food parcels to the needy in .................BRITAIN! yes, they have to step in and help people who have their benefits reassessed (ie stopped) and are left with nothing for weeks on end. Now that made me cry, not a nice cry,
Now the WII - why not try a cheeky offer - you dont ask you dont get. If you are willing to pay the higher price you could also go back later and say you found the extra if they dont accept the offer. Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow -- Mary Anne Radmacher0 -
OK I need to stop logging in and out and post (deep breath)
50 Day Challenge
1. I will do 1 hour language study every day
2. I will finish at least three of my craft WIPs
3. I will do some exercise every day (not putting a figure on this as I intend to work through a programme I have which builds over time)0 -

Ok gone with the cheeky offer but got an email back saying they are away for the week grrr - we'll see if its meant to be.
How I just need to finalise my 50 day challenges...2020 Mortgage-Free Wannabes #20 £1495.03/£2760 OP0 -
Morning all, slept in this morning  OH forgot to bring his phone (with the alarm set) upstairs so we got up half an hour late and had a mad rush to get to work! Happy that it's Friday, and payday, and my mum is coming to visit for a few days
I've sorted out my 50 day challenge:
1. Finish mentoring course and arrange next steps
2. Finish philosophy course and arrange next steps
3. Post on blog at least 2 times a week and build up a following
4. Get debt down to £7k
5. Lose 10lb
6. Do something to work on my lack of confidence
Claire - good luck to DS with his gardening. I got quite a few freebie packs of seeds last year, will let you know if I come across any more - the BBC Dig In campaign was really good, gave away a few packs of seeds and had great tips. Watermelons are pretty hard to grow I think - they like lots of sun!
Edit - ps I paid off the last of my overdraft today - woohoo!Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0 -

Have you heard of Jillian Michaels Shred DVD, there's lots of fans of it on Hypno's thread. It's on Amazon, and gets good reviews there. I've not got around to using it other than one try, but I like it. It might be a better alternative than the wii, I must admit I got fed up with the wii after about 4 to 6 weeks, so passed it on to my son, he found it the same, although you can get other discs for it, but not tried them.
shred has 3 x 30 minute workouts of increasing intensity. Otherwise some of the 10 minute solution DVDs are good too.0 -
Challenge for today was to find somewhere to live and not to come back without keys to new place. I have failed
I have now applied for the property that should work for us but won't be ready before mid November (I should be able to move on the same day that MG has the Leeds seminar) and booked a storage space and hired a van. Now I just need to find somewhere to live temporarily. I was thinking of caravan parks with these permanent caravans. Does anybody know a good website for finding these before I start googling tomorrow?
Too much to catch up, my brain has switched itself off, better get some sleep as I have only one day left to pack all the contents of this house.
Agree with the other comments, you haven't failed!
When we had the kitchen and bathroom refitted, we stayed in a holiday chalet in a haven park type thing (think it was warners) for about £150 for the week. Suited us fine for the short time we stayed there.Became Mrs Scotland 16.01.16Became homeowners 26.02.16
