Wow todays call was a toughie - pushed all sorts of control freak buttons I've managed to avoid dealing with before.

So I put the kettle on and threw the makings of a loaf of sultana bread in the BM. Made the menu plan for next week so I know what needs making for easy lunches, even made the teeny shopping list of bits I need to collect today.

So as a very wise person on here has said several times before

    "AVOIDANCE TECHNIQUE ALERT" :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

So I very bravely managed to sit down here and report in BEFORE I resorted to the ironing pile :D

I was having a very pleasant chat with this new Mentor Chappie (not one I've talked to before) about how did I find my first week back at work?

"Still pretty upbeat I guess. Realising now that I need a better strategy for sales pipeline and am really excited about the work the Matrix is doing. Need to pull off for a while and concentrate on sales to build a safety cushion for the boys and to get rid of the bank once and for all. Can't do it all after all, only so many hours in the day Yadda yadda yadda!!"

    "Why not?"

    "Why not what?"

"Why can't you have it all"

thinks "!!!!!!??" says "well the kids - I'm finding it impossible to make calls during the day when the toddler is around - he is pretty noisy"

"Why do you have to make the calls"

    "Eh???"

"Why do YOU have to make the calls"

    "There's only me"

    "No there's not!"

    "There's not?"

"Theres a whole world out there!! - do you think in the whole world there might be the perfect person who loves selling that would be perfect for your business"

    "Probably"

"Defintely!!! You are in the last stages of a £10k a day speaking contract - do speakers that are worth that kind of money do their own sales?"

    "I guess not"

"Does Mr Big do his own sales?"

"No - he has a team that does that"

So the problem is not that the toddler is too noisy - the problem is you need to get your head around building a team who can each work to their strengths - right or wrong?"

    "Right"

"So how are you going to do that"

    "No b****y idea"

"Well thats honest - start by writing down the qualities of the person you are looking for. You can't find them until you know what you are looking for"

    "OK"

"Your team needs to have sales, admin, marketing and delivering and developping roles - here's a hint - your roles are the delivering, developing ones - OK? So you need to come up with descriptions of the other roles too - OK?"

"OK!!!! But how am I going to pay for these people? I'm just starting out again"

"Commission - and you are just going to look at filling the Sales Role at first - maybe even one person for the open courses and one for the corporate courses"

    "Eh?"

"You bring them on commision based, if they feel its the role for them and they are generating the sales you bring them on and pay AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AFFORD to have them help you build the business with a really generous commission structure on the back"

    "oh!! OK!!"

    " Catch these numbers.

    For the Open Weekend Courses

    25 courses throughout the year
    35 delegates on each course
    £95 per delegate
Minus £15 per delegate for room and transport and hotel - the costs you will incurr for running the courses
£80 per delegate - split the money into two.

    Got a calculator?

    25 X 35 X 80 / 2 = £35,000

Do you think there might be someone in the world who would want to earn £35,000 for finding 875 people in the next 6 months?"

    "Yes"

"Do you think that once that person has got themselves off and rolling they would be able to fill more than 25 sessions"

    "Yes"

"So why are you worrying about "selling" when you should be concentrating on finding the right person to do it for you"

    "Point taken"

"Talk to you next Wednesday - email me your list of the kind of person you are looking for - Bye!"

Clairewop - I think I might have found the beads used in the earings and bracelet I saw, if not the silver ones are very similar.

They have passion, an amazing network of people, neurolinguistic skills. Self belief, an understanding of the K.P.I's and targeted market they are working with.
An understanding of Pareto and the 80/20.
More than basic knowledge of net-working and media networking.
People skills, listening skills and interpersonal skills.
Knwledge of the market is key because knowledge is power.

And ususally a good financial incentive is key because people are basically. 'whats in it for me'
Not my forte but for someone, what an opportunity
And I'm no sales person just think the above is common sense.

Oh how I wish I was good at Sales and being made redundant now rather than April 2010  I am good at Admin and Finance though and could be doing that evenings/weekends if it would help :D

Anyway, for those of us doing research for MG, this may be useful:

The earings had the beads dangling from short silver chains. The bracelet had about 5 beads staggered along a plain silver chain.

The person wearing was late teens/early twenties, dressed in hotel reception type smart uniform, and they gave just the amount of lift to stand out without being too flash. Posh hotel chain - so presumably strict dress code.

So good for work or going out :D

    Hi

I used to work in recruitment and assessment centres for a large bank (ducks)

Although its a couple of years since I did this, I am happy to help with the recruitment side of things.

From memory this is the kind of "Person Specification" that I would look for in a successful Sales Person.
    • Excellent comunication skills
    • Personable and confident- People buy from people
    • Self motivated
    • Able to set goals and targets for themself, putting a clear strategy in place as to how they are achieved.
    • Break down what needs to be done into chunks/milestones with clear tracking & monitoring
    • Resiliant with a "Can do" attitude. Can over come obsticles and set backs- Looks for solutions rather than giving up at the first hurdle until they can achive what they have set out to do.
    • Creative- Can see and create an opportunity and explore different options.
    • Motivated & excited by achieving goals and targets
Thats off the top of my head, I'll have a root around and see what kind of info I have that might help.

I'd be happy to pull some questions to help you sort through the candidates, and give you tips on how to interview them, depending on the level of response you get of course. ( I used to train Area Managers in Assessment Centre Techniques , ie how to run Competency Based Interviews, Role-Plays, Group exercises etc)

Just as I was thinking that at 8 months Preggers I had nothing to offer the Matrix, the universe asks for my skill set! X
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja- vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before
