An article in House Beautiful June 07 states

Houseflies - Place vases of fresh rosemary and thyme around to repel them

Ants - Sprinkle red chilli pepper or peppermint oil across the line of entry

Hope this helps maybe not OS but very cheap to do

If you want a cheap alternative fly screen...you know those gazebo side panels that are fine mesh,(i got 2 for £3.99) i have got one of those, cut it down..run a hem at the op and bottom and then you can either thread a bean/pea cane through and hang it on hooks over the door and the bottom can weights it down, or you can use that stretchy net curtain wire to stretch it across your door...
and as a newish money saver.. the off cut made a great tent to keep the birds of my strawberries when they were ripening last year..lol

    Hi Proofraider,

There are lots of suggestions on this older thread that should help. I've merged your thread with it to keep all the replies together.

    Please help!

I have been getting a lot of flies in my kitchen. I have had a fair rummage and not found anything they may have come from and they are all different types (as far as I can see) and I am just about to start on as much of a strip down and scour as I can while looking after 6month old DS.

I suspect that flies like to sleep on my white, south facing kitchen door. Two flew in last time I opened it! Then it becomes like an episode of Fawlty Towers as DH tries to kill the flies. I tried one of those electric zappers (ebay is my friend), but after two weeks the score was DH 10, zapper nil!

I have started growing an eau de cologne mint near my kitchen, but it is not yet established. Any other ideas from deterring/getting rid of flies that will not use chemicals that could affect me, DH, our two cats or 6 month old DS?

    Many, many thanks

Hi, Hev - have you tried one of those yellow sticky traps - they trap the flies before they get into your kitchen.

Alternatively, try this thread - Getting rid of flies - more than 150 replies!

Do you think it is just Lidl's own? It is hard for me to get to a Lidl, but Netto is possible and I would even pay out silly corner shop prices for the real stuff if I could get rid of the dratted, buzzing %$&*(

  • The past few days I have had to kill dozens of flies in my kitchen the big ones not the midgeys, this sounds minging but my kitchen is clean and it just seems to be the kitchen where they gather, are they coming in from the cold rain outside do you think.

They are easy to get too not your usual fast ones they seem very lethargic and slow I have searched and re cleaned my kitchen wondering if the cat has brough in some furry without my nowing and they were coming off there and no hidden foods anywhere either - I just don't understand any tips please?
