Check out the latest addition to my "arsenal" of weaponry against the flies, a fork-leaved sundew:

That looks very impressive, where did you get it from?

Got it from a mate, so don't know where you might find one, sorry. :(

Latin name is drosera binata, if that helps?
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

My brother lives in rural France and there they have beaded curtains at the open doors and outside on the patio they usually keep a big pot of lavender .I don't know if it helps or not but he seems to have very few flies in his kitchen. He also has a brown sticky strip for the ones that do manage to slip through and that gets them as a rule .I hate the smell of the sprays and have got a thing about spray cans in general anyway as I think they are far more costlier and less useful than the old-fashioned way of doing things .Plus of course the spray seems to fly everywhere but where you want it to go. I have no pressurised spray cans in my house at all

Does anyone have an OS method of discouraging flies now that the weather's warming up? I hate spraying chemicals around the kitchen to kill them, but I can't stand the idea of them possibly landing on food, fruit, pet food etc - with the best will in the world, you can't keep everything covered all the time. If anyone has concocted some marvellous mixture to keep in a saucer on the windowsill or something like that, please let me know!

Have you tried fly paper? We used to be plagued by flies in Africa much worse than we are here and it worked a treat. I don't like the chemicals in fly spray either.

I try to stop them coming in in the first place, with a beaded door curtain. They still get in, but nowhere near as many. I'm also considering fly screens when I change the windows, but if you have sash windows you might be able to look at that anyway. Not very cheap, I know, but does the trick. I've been looking for a candle I can burn too. Not sure where to find them or how chemical they are, but I'm sure there's something you can burn to keep them away.

A Citronella (sp??) candle is supposed to keep them away.

I think you can also buy it in an oil to burn in a burner which should help too.

  • My landlord who owns a farm swears by a 'South African' fly trap - it's basically a plastic bag with something in (no idea what) that you hang on a tree or fence (doesn't have to be in your garden) and it attracts and kills all the flies in the area.

I have seen them on Ebay for around £18 - not cheap but they do work.
