I've bought some cider vinegar today as I caught nothing over night with the ordinary vinegar.
Fingers crossed I catch something.:D0 -
Ha!
I have the answer to that one...
..the vacuum cleaner.
Use the bare hose without an attachment - wait until the fly settles somewhere.
You then slowly approach the fly from dead square on. The draft of air being sucked in by the hose prevents the fly from feeling the air current generated by something moving towards it and - swooch! there it goes!
There's a knack to it, of course, but once you get the trick of it you'll catch them first time at least eight out of ten. And no mess
It sounds like hard work especially when they settle on the ceiling.
I will try it with the odd one but there are so many and they are not just in the kitchen any more because of having the windows open in this lovely weather.
I've got my cider vinegar ready now so I will wait and see what happens with that.
Failing that maybe the same as for wasps, an empty jam jar with water in and covered in cling film with small holes in. Hopefully they will like strawberry jam:D0 -
My battery fly swatter also kills wasps!! just discovered htat as a friend brought one at the same time and has been b usy killing wasps with his!Member 1145 Sealed Pot Challenge No4

Spiders
I have left a cobweb in my back hall where the door is always open for the dogs, near the light. It catches loads. I do swoosh the rest with the vacuum cleaner, don't have cobwebs anywhere else as DP hates them, but have left 'Legs' the resident spider to do the fly killing job for me for the last month or so, I have changed which cobwebs I leave, vacuuming down one of the ones with loads of fly 'empties' on this morning but left another out for him. He's having a great time now it's warmer, with all these flies his tummy is rather full I think. He probably hates me as every day I swoosh down most of the web he's made, but at least I leave him a bit and haven't killed him. He's become the resident as I have evicted him several times but he comes back. I know it's him as he has only 7 legs.
Do have an electric zappery thing but never seems to catch many, moths es, but not many flies. One day I might be more organised...........

Well I had fun today.
I had to hoover my utility room, where most of the flies come in before going into the kitchen.
It was loads of fun sucking them up. I must of got 20 at least.:rotfl: They didn't all keep still so I had to do a bit of chasing.:D
I've also caught 3 so far in the cider vinegar.:T
Newspapered about 20 as well.:rotfl:
Killing spree ended for today and it all starts again tomorrow.:rotfl:0 -
Blimey that's a lot of flies! Hasn't been quite that bad here. I do however remember when my sister lived near a council tip, omg the amount of flies was horrific!
I'm going to try the vinegar idea, that sounds a safe enough one with kids and animals about. See thing is I can't use sprays etc even if I want to as my lizard is there, plus his crickets etc. My Dad bought me this sonic one once which said for flies, woke up next morning and all Woody's dinner was deadok it worked but didn't want it to kill them!

Basically put some cider or white wine vinegar in a jar, add a couple of drops of washing up liquid (for those who like the science bit this is apparently to break the surface tension), cover with cling film and make a couple of tiny holes. The flies are attracted to the vinegar, get in and drown! It works fantasically well.
What is cider vinegar? I have plenty of cider and plain brown (malt?) vinegar, should I mix these together or something?0 -

I know it seems a lot but they are only fruit flies so they are tiny.
There's no tip for a good few miles but it's the compost bin they are coming from. Probably from the one next door as well as ours. Both are half way down the garden and if I put them at the end they will be a pain when we want to eat outside.
I don't use sprays because of the kids Asthma as well as hating the smell.
We have decided to only use the compost bins for garden refuse now and not fruit and veg peelings etc. I'll start using it for the rest in the winter months.0 -
Oh yes, compost bin, luckily mines a council collected wheelie bin, I open and shut as quick as possible as it's full of those little blighters. I've also had to deal with a houseful before, but not mine thankfully. Neighbour went away leaving house to me, asked me to go in weekly to deal with post, forgot about a bag of carrots, by the time I found the bag they were liquid and the house was full of flies. Ewww. Unfortunately that time I had to use chemicals, not much choice. My son has asthma too so no way I can use them at home either.
