I was plagued by fruit files last year and used a tip I saw on 'How Clean is Your House'.
Basically put some cider or white wine vinegar in a jar, add a couple of drops of washing up liquid (for those who like the science bit this is apparently to break the surface tension), cover with cling film and make a couple of tiny holes. The flies are attracted to the vinegar, get in and drown! It works fantasically well.

Mine doesn't need vinegar.

If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Go on tell me. I guess you do the same as me and go on a killing spree with a rolled up newspaper.
It makes such a mess though.:eek:0 -
Ha!
I have the answer to that one...
..the vacuum cleaner.
Use the bare hose without an attachment - wait until the fly settles somewhere.
You then slowly approach the fly from dead square on. The draft of air being sucked in by the hose prevents the fly from feeling the air current generated by something moving towards it and - swooch! there it goes!
There's a knack to it, of course, but once you get the trick of it you'll catch them first time at least eight out of ten.
