    Hi,

I had a 4d scan with my DD, purely because I didn't actually believe I was pregnant as I had real problems conceiving, so I had one to make it more real for me, which it did.

The cutest bit for me was seeing her there with her legs crossed, which she still does almost 4 years on.

Research shows that 3d scans may cause the baby pain . Most Mw would not recommend them but its personal choice. I have to have growth scans at 28 , 32 and 36 so I will see my baby further down the line.

Im worried about my baby as it is and wouldnt want to put it at risk . I will be putting 100 into a bank account for her . But again just my opinion.

I've never heard of scans causing a baby pain. I'm sure if that was proven, they'd no longer be allowed.

Why are you worried about your baby, dizzybuff? I hope everything is ok with you and baby.

I had one at 28 weeks pregnant with my DS and I loved it!
We wanted to find out the sex at the 20 week scan but couldn't because of his position, so we asked to find out at our 4D scan. It was called a "bonding scan" and thats exactly what I did. It was so amazing - I felt like I had met him for the first time and rather than 'spoiling the suprise' as some people have suggested it just made me feel so much closer to him. I watched the DVD over and over again. I also think it will be really cool (and possibly a bit weird!) for him to watch it himself when he gets older. Hope your daughter takes you up on your generous offer and enjoys it as much as we did.

I dont think its spoiling the suprise. Its still a surprise, only 10/20 weeks earlier.

When I was pregnant in 2009 in Glasgow we only got one scan at approx 12/14 weeks. Most others areas get another scan at 20 weeks. We paid privately at BabyBond for the 3D/4D scan, more for piece of mind and to ensure all was well with the baby and placenta.

Whilst the pictures can be good, it's dependent of the position of the baby you get to watch your baby on a big screen - it's fantastic! We actually got to go back a second time as the first visit our baby was hiding behind her hands! We got some good pics and a few short video clips!

I belive they have re-introduced the 20 week scan for all in the Glasgow area.

Good luck with whatever you decide! Meant to say - we asked not to find out the sex and they were careful not to show us too much and we looked away whilst they were checking that area; so out little girl was still a surprise!

Personally I don’t like them the images are a little too realistic for my liking and I find them quite scary, like snugglepet I prefer the basic black and white 2d ones that you can get. Even though I know when the babies actually arrive in real life they don’t look scary in those pictures there’s just something that freaks me out!

I would definitely check with your daughter in case she is one of the people who doesn’t really like the pictures either.

Going to make a somewhat controversial request here - but one I think needs to be said (which is why I braced myself and ventured onto the thread knowing what would lay in wait... took till page 3 though).

Please can people exercise a bit more sensitivity with scan photos, particularly these 3D scan ones? I went through three years of fertility problems, only to discover that, not only do I have issues concieving, but I also have recurrent miscarriages. I've lost two pregnancies (one single, one twin) in the last few months and these scan photos are the bane of my life lately - they can really really upset and send people into fits of tears hiding in the loos at work. A "friend" on facebook uploaded them for weeks because her baby was being uncooperative so she had to go back for rescans... and every single time I saw them - it brought all my losses and grief back. It's worse with the 3D ones because they ARE so detailed, you can smile sweetly and focus on the fact that it's harder to tell what's what with the traditional ones and it hurts less - but the 3D ones bring home crystally clear that you had a child in there curled up peacefully and your body failed you.

Just the words, "I've had one of those 3D scans done, do you WANT to see the pictures?" and no hard feelings if people don't - it really does make all the difference... there are lots of us out there smiling sweetly when we're made to look at these, and then running to the loos for a quick sneaky cry.

(Kind of like the posters here who provided links to theirs, versus the person who just shoved them straight on the thread - please give people the chance to choose - it can be very very painful for some)

I await now the bashing, the accusations of bitterness, jealousy etc (who wouldn't be if they'd had to walk the road we do) and the "oh how can you put a wet blanket on someone's pregnancy" blastings - but I needed to say what I did.

Ive seen both sides of this. I lost two pregnancies before I had my two children due to endometriosis and I can therefore somewhat empathise with your situation although I obviously understand that everyones feelings are different.

But also, by the same token the OP is an excited Nanan to be and the subsequent posters have all got something to offer her by way of an opinion on her post.

The title does what it says on the tin - if you feel it is too painful to see peoples scan pictures steer clear of threads where people might be tempted to post them, like this one - where they are entirely relevant to the OP's question.

I truly and sincerely hope you get the baby you are longing for. Do remember some of those who are so proudly showing their baby scan photos may well also have been down a similar road before the joy of becoming pregnant - even though I had miscarried twice and feared long term fertility issues due to the Endowmetriosis I still showed my scans photos to anyone who would look at them because I was so happy.

Incidentally, I had a 4D scan with my 2nd child at 24 weeks and it was lovely and a very worthwhile experience for both me and my husband to see our little girl but also for my Son, who was almost 3 at the time, to see her.

I'm really taken aback, I posted some pics of my 3d scan thinking that would be useful to someone trying to work out if they're worthwhile - can't believe I've been accused of shoving them down the throats of people who can't have children!!

I am truly and genuinely sorry to have caused upset and have deleted my offending post but if I'm honest I don't understand why on earth you would read a thread about scans when it's such a painful subject for you. I'd totally deserve strips torn off me (and worse!) if I'd stuck pics up in the miscarriage support thread for sure but on a thread asking about people's experience of 3d scans?

Maybe I'm best not to reply at all in future if I'm capable of causing such distress without even trying!

Sorry to have caused problems on your thread OP. :(

Do you have details of this ? Otherwise, no offence meant, you could be just scaring people!

Isn't a 3D based scan just several 2D scans sent at different angles so a computer program can use the angles/measurements to reconstruct a 3D image ? : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_ultrasound

In answer to the original question - we had one done for our first and thought it was excellent.

    Cheers
