I prefer to have it off until I can't bear it any longer.

So do I, but I can't find a young lady, who will oblige. :(

Not only is my heating not on today, but I've had to open the window, as it was too hot in the living room.

I bought a pair of "THERMAL HOT SOX" on the market yesterday.

They have a TOG rating of 2.3.

    Is that good?

Gave in last night and put the heating on for a couple of hours. Have got it on timer for a couple of hours morning and evening. It's only on 18 so hopefully that'll be enough to keep the chill off.

The idea of having your heating on ALL the time is that your dwelling will warm up and feel more comfortable, so maintaining a comfortable temperature uses less heat than constantly warming up the space.

In practice, how efficient this is depends on a lot of variables: the mass of the dwelling, the insulation, air flow etc.

Whether it is worth it or not depends on other factors such as who is in the house (vulnerable, ill or small people or people who can put up with being chilly) and for how long.

I have heated dwellings from small flats to large houses, some with no effective insulation, some with good (and now, with excellent!) insulation. In those dwellings my household has varied from 2 fit adults out at work all day, to shift workers, new-born babies, ill & elderly frail people in all day and so on.
I do think that on the whole the best value (not necessarily the very cheapest) does come from keeping some background warmth. Insulation is the key - go for as much as you can possibly afford. For 3 winters I lived in a small but very poorly insulated flat (that I couldn't alter, other than using thick curtains and door snakes) - we were working shifts and the only heating was an open fire. We found the most efficient way of heating to be comfortable was to use the most expensive, but very slow-burning coke. We made the fire up twice a day and kept it going all the time.

I think that the most important thing is insulation, and for those that can install them and afford them, individual room thermostats.

    Still off.

I have my fleece blanket wrapped around me this evening, but the children are still doing without their jumpers, so cant be that cold!

Have just read this: http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/436170/Worst-winter-for-decades-Record-breaking-snow-predicted-for-November and am even more determined to keep it off as long as possible, especially if we have that to contend with from November-Jan.
