Hello everyone, still not had to put heating on, just relying on my trusty jumper and slippers haha. Although I am a Northerner in the South which probably helps a bit, my parents have said they have got their heating on.

Anyhoo I have questions about the electric heating again. Am I right in thinking I have to go and turn the input dial up from zero to make it take heat in from the electricity at night, then turn that back to zero when it isn't the cheaper night rate anymore? And do I go and turn the output dial up to make heat come out of it, then down again to zero when I want the heating off for a bit? They don't have timers you see, just the two dials and an on/off wall switch.

I hate these stupid things, why can't I buy a house with a combi boiler... *grumblegrumble*

Living room is around 15.5 oc with no heating on as yet. I am Freezing! But am using a half kw heater in bedroom for a couple of hours to heat that, and a gas heater in living room for a couple of hours each night.
Storage heater in living room only, so trying to hold on switching that on till it's a bit more frosty, or a finger or toe falls off! :D

You can leave the input switch up as it will only heat up when the wall switch is on. Most of the time you shouldn't need to have the output turned up at all, only when extra cold and you need a boost of heat always remembering to switch off when they are charging up. You should get enough heat without the boost which drains the heat very quickly.

    On

Came back from walking the dog over the field and it was very cold indeed. It was nice to walk back into a lovely warm home. They are forecasting a ground frost tonight for us.

Sometimes the thermometer will say the same reading as other days as I write this I feel the coldest I have all day...I know that I am because my hands are cold and I may have to put gloves on...wearing gloves indoors in this day and age...

Wonder how many clothes I will need to put on as Winter really bites...first one without Mum and the cushion her pension gave income wise so we were really cosy has gone...now it' s the opposite story...they can put me on the lowest tariff possible it will still be too much for me...and it makes no difference what size property I live...

I'm properly confused now! Sorry :o If I leave the input dial up all the time, how does the heater know when it's cheaper rate so it must charge then? And it will give off heat while charging anyway, without the output dial on? Thanks for trying to help, I just really want to get my head around what's best to do with these so I don't end up burning all the money!

ETA Forget all that, I appear to have 2 different types of heater. One of them looks to be how you described it, the other has "room temperature" dial and "auto-set control" dial. I am going to Google this one when I get a minute.

It will only come on at the cheaper rate time. Believe me I've had storage heaters for more years that I care to count and my input dial is never turned completely off, just adjusted according to temperature needs. The output dial is nothing to do with charging and gives extra heat and the heater gives off heat whether the output is on or not.
