Have you had your loft insulated? I think there's a new round of grants as we've had several people either phone or call at the house asking if we've claimed for ours (we have - did it a couple of months ago and it makes a very big difference).

Heating has come on for about an hour in the evening, before "bedtime" at the request of my flatmate. House was at 14C before the heating came on. Got to 20C in my room before it was turned off, room is now at 17C. Not bad, all in all. I don't think the thermostat actuallly does much as there's a radiator right next to the entrance door that can't be regulated - and by the entrance door the temperature has been down to 6C some mornings  - so I can't just leave the heating on like that. Still haven't figured out how to put it on a timer so, for now, we're just turning it on whenever one of us feels the house is too cold. Does anyone know if there's a problem with doing this?

  • A problem with turning on the heating when the house is too cold? No, not one I can think of. If the pipes were in danger of bursting you'd KNOW the house was too cold. The reason there's a radiator that can't be regulated is to ensure water-flow in the system when the pump is working as a safety measure. Mine is in the living-room.

I just paid my estimated gas-bill today. They'd overestimated the units used, so in theory I now have a few free ones. As a consequence the heating went on for a couple of hours this evening in celebration. Just as well really, it was 11 degrees in here. It was a bit parky.

    I've been Money Tipped!
its mild...one of the horses was too hot under her winter rug and has had to go into her autun/spring one this morning. BUT in the house the cats and Dog dog are staring at the (unlit woodburner) and hoping. :)

I'm trying to do my menu plan for the next week/ten days then going out I'll light it when I'm back from that. We've got used to it over the last few days, I think we'd struggle to go till tomorrow with no heat.

I'm no heating engineer but from what I can work out (as mine is the same), but that radiator is regulated by the thermostat.
My thermostat is at the bottom of the stairs about 6ft away from the unregulated radiator. So that one is left to do what it pleases so it can activate the thermostat.
If you could turn that radiator down to the lowest setting then the thermostat would have to be activated by the next nearest radiator. If that's the one in the lounge then the lounge, bedrooms, kitchen etc, could be hitting 35c before the hall gets to 20c

yep its fully insulated ... honest weve done everything we can think of even had people out to look at it
  • Its still off at the moment but we have noticed the significant drop in temperature the past few days and have been so tempted to flick it on, but resisted the urge. We have sunshine today and a slight breeze which is a welcome break and a day to catch up with the laundry after the past week of wet downpours or drizzly and windy weather.

Just 2 more days until my Mam arrives though so we will be submitting meter readings and putting it on then for a couple of hours a day :j woohoo :D!

My kitchen is still cold, even after we got the loft insulated. It's a flat roof extension and has loads of vents under the floor. We bought a calor gas heater for in there as it rarely gets above 15C in the cold weather, even with the heating on. We have double glazing and a new back door so I dread to think what it must've been like before. I honestly wouldn't need a fridge in the winter as I could just keep everything cold in the cupboards!
