  • It's been snowing where I live, so should I have the heating on all the time again now, to prevent the pipes freezing?

Only if it's well below freezing during the daytime

Is there a way to know when that is?
I just thought snow = things freezing haha. :o I thought if it's cold enough to make snow, it must be cold enough to freeze pipes. I think I'm just super paranoid about frozen pipes! I'm worried I wont know when it's the right time to have the heating on, and miss it, and then the pipes will freeze or something.

It has to be very cold for internal pipes to freeze, something like the cold snaps of the last two winters (a once in a decade event). I really wouldn't worry at all unless the temperature falls below -5C overnight and hardly rises above 0C during the day. Even then it may take at least 3 days of extreme weather for this to happen and that is in a house without any heating on at all. I very much doubt it is even below freezing at the moment despite there being snow on the ground. The only pipes you really need to concern yourself about are those in the loft space and if they are lagged they should be fine as long as they get regular water flow through them during the day and evenings

LazyLizzie i have a weather station that has a little wireless sensor outside to monitor the temperature, in previous years i`ve seen little suction cup thermometers that you can attach to the outside of a window to check, not seen one for a while though.

Its zero degrees outside here and its sunny so after walking the dogs i went back outside and cleared some snow, it is starting to melt where the sun is shining on it but with more forecast i want to try and keep the paths and driveway clear, it only takes 20-30 mins to clear it all unlike last year when it snowed all day when i was at work and it took me over two hours to clear a small path

Hope fully now the sun will take care of the clear bits and i can just sweep any excess off the top before it freezes again later.

Heating is doing its job now and its a toasty 18 degrees inside - might even pop the water on later for a nice hot bath. Come to think of it last time i did that it didn`t work :rotfl:

    Keep warm peeps.

I agree with this, last winter when we had 2 really cold extended spells of weather (it was minus temps all day and up to -8 at night, for about a week at a time) we had a frozen outside pipe, but no problems with the inside pipes. We did have the heating on at 10f when we were out of the house though during this spell.

    wouldn't be surprised!

I've just been out in the yard and coming in it always feels warmer :)

edit: have to say, think today will be the last day I go with not lighting the woodburner at all for at least the holiday season. I think it must get harder soon out there and I know its going to be harder to do without after having it on over holiday season....

this evening i AM chilly, so have made a hot water bottle, but tomorrow I've decide in advance I will light the burner in the morning, not wait till the afternoon as I did last friday, but try and get the sitting room a bit toastier.

The dining room feels distinctly unfriendly, so I might also put an electric heater in there for a blast for a little while in the next few days to ward against damp/problems.
