Were your leaks in the pipes that run under the floorboards near the chimney breast?

We had a leak in a pipe that ran in front of the chimney breast a few years ago - totally my fault as i put a screw in the floorboard to fasten it down properly and stop it squeaking, i thought that it would be fine as there was a nail hole there and the nail was missing. It turns out that the nail hole must have been from before the heating was installed and i went straight through a water pipe :o It was just after we had moved in and i was there alone as DH worked nights then and over a couple of hours it dumped the contents of the full central heating system under the house :o 8 radiators lol. I can laugh about it now but it wasn`t funny at the time. Because we had only been there a couple of days i didn`t know where all the stop valves were.

It was fixed using a compression fitting on the water pipe - i didn`t know that you could get leak stop stuff  Do you just pour it in somewhere and it fixes leaks?

Fingers crossed for you that you don`t have any more trouble, its far too cold to be messing around with water leaks and drying out now BRRR!

Our heating is well and truly on, its 6 degrees outside and 18 inside atm, i`ve just had to venture down the garden to change the batteries in the wireless sensor and it feels absolutely freezing, it was only 4 degrees this morning when i went to w*rk:eek: I`m hoping that there will be no car scrapeing in the morning but i`m not holding my breath lol

Leak was to the left side of the chimney breast but a bit further into the room. The boiler has lost pressure gradually when the CH has been on over the past three years but we've had leaking rad valves mended and then it's been fine. The pipework (plus electric cables) are like spaghetti junction under the floorboards and enough to make a plumber scratch his head. Joys of being in the builders house I suppose plus they did things differently in the 40's! Fingers crossed it's solved it as otherwise it's floorboards up trying to track all pipes or the diverting and dropping down.

Leak stop stuff - I think it's not always succesaful and is added to the system via a radiator.

OMG at your accident. Can imagine how much water came out:eek:My DH once put a nail thorugh a pipe but luckily it was in the day and we got to the stopcock quickly.
  • I've been too busy today to even worry about heating and I've just sat down now for the first time since I got up at 6.30 this morning.
Got my PJs and dressing gown on and actually I feel realy warm so not realy worth putting it on tonight.
Its been great this mild weather, lets hope it stays like this as long as possible.
Can't help thinking back at this time last year and remembering just how cold it was.
We can only hope it won't get like that again.

    OFF

It is 8C outside according to the Windows weather thingy on my lappy. Not a bad day, although VERY foggy here today.

It was 14C inside when I got home at 5.30pm.
It was only 13C yesterday and I put the heating on for just under an hour, as it felt quite cold.

I cannot stand it too hot - makes me quite ill - and find that about 15C is just right for me, and I'm certainly not cold tonight. Longsleeved thin jumper/leggings and no extra layers on.

Even in summer it only got to 19C inside - if I put my thermostat on 20C my boiler would never be off!!!! :rotfl:

Just seen the following on Sunnydays' post:
Our heating is well and truly on, its 6 degrees outside and 18 inside atm

I read other people's inside temps and am amazed at the difference with mine - I suppose that's the difference cavity wall insulation makes!

When it get's cold, the temperature inside goes down to 7 or 8 C whilst I'm at work if there is no heating on.

I usually leave the boiler on 24 hrs and keep the thermostat on 11 or 12 C whilst I'm out and then turn it up to 15 or 16C when I get in for about 5 hrs and then back down to 11 or 12C

1920's ex authority house, loft well insulated, no cavity walls, unfortunately :(

    :(

Lol i`ve just been reading about cavity wall insulation, i`m not sure that ours is as it should be. We can only find evidence of it in a downstairs bay window or rather the brickwork underneath it.

Where we have pipes run through walls and have drilled to the outside for cables there is no evidence and also no evidence of it on the front of the house which is stone clad.

I think that i may contact a few places and ask about it and see if we can have a top up as its the rockwool type i think ( little pieces of material )

I`d love to have it done with the polybead stuff as i know that its super insulating but we would have to pay for it all as we wouldn`t be elegible for any of the grants - not even the latest one in Martins email.

Has anyone had theirs topped up with either the same stuff or a different type? I`d be interested to know.

Temp outside is now down to 5 and falling

Planning on starting the GC again soon :p
  • Sunnydays Could you not get someone offering the free insulation out to survey your house for the insulation?

Just looked through the e-mail and there's a few free offers NOT depending on you being on benefits or over 70.

    Still 8C here.

  • Still off and it's not 'cold' either. Patio doors are open for the dogs and there's a gentle breeze coming through but i'm still wearing a t-shirt. Although i'm up at half 5 so i should be wearing a pair of shorts and a duvet round my neck

Well it's been colder here today currently 7.7 degrees outside but 21.7 degrees inside again I've only had the heatin g on for 1 hour morning and 2 hours in the evening been off since 9pm. I put it down to cavity wall insulation and good quality double glazed UPVC windows hope we can keep this up alittle longer we are comfy with 3 hours heating per day.
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

    I've been Money Tipped!
My windows upstairs are open, but its been cold. This morning, the drier air means no condensation here. I don't need any supplementary heat now (in a tshirt though a tthe edge of t shirt tolerance) but will see how I feel later.
