It is on but we have the fuel burner also generating extra heat. It was bitterly cold when we were walking back with the dogs this afternoon. So we did put the heating on.

If you think its bitterly cold in Middle England, wait till you move up to Northumberland - Englands coldest county!! I did 5 years in the Cheviots without central heating - very few brass monkeys around!!

Had the heating on for 1 hour this morning and 2 hours this evening it's 8.1 degree's outside and still 20.3 inside and heating has been off since 9pm
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)
  • on today to get some warmth, will then go off and we`ll resort to fleeces if needed

    Still off!

But now I'm in a hat and my winter walking trousers. DD is complaining about the lack of a fire, I told her to go and put her big winter jumper on, that's what it's there for!
    Has she?
No, still lounging around in her school uniform.....

DS (2) has on some skiing trousers we got from a charity shop and a fleece, so he's nice and warm.

Have tried 2 candles in the living room to see if it makes a difference.

I never got round to putting any heat on yesterday, but its cold today. I've lit the woodburner though and even though its been on a while its not heating the place very well yet, but it will, I just might have to keep it chugging away well into the evening.

edit: actually, now I've closed the curtains its warming up pretty quickly. I suppose that means I'll be opening them less wide in the future!

Really starting to feel cold today. I'm wearing a T shirt, rugby shirt, fleece and a jumper. Determined to last until at least the end of the month before putting the heating on!

    Hi abwsco,

everything seems to be fine, thanks for asking :A

There is one board still up in the bedroom to let air circulate but it seems to have dried out well. Every now and again there is a faint musty smell when the temperature drops in that room but its fading fast. I think that it will be from the far end of the joist where we couldn`t get the boards up. The fact that the smell is fading and isn`t there all the time gives me confidence that we have escaped extremely lightly - it could have been much worse

We will decorate the living room early next spring so the patchy bits on the ceiling will be covered but i`m finding that they`re not that noticeable now, only if you look up at the ceiling to see how they are going lol

The plaster has dried out nicely in the small bedroom that we had done so when i get some time off i will spend a few hours in there with a damp microfibre cloth going over all the walls and ceiling to get rid of any bits and dust so that the paint will be nice and smooth. I`m still hoping to get this room finished before Christmas.

I`ve just clicked the thermostat up a notch as it was only 16 degrees when i came home from w*rk, i`ve not checked the forecast for a couple of days but i do remember reading that tonight and tomorrow are going to be a lot colder, its 7 degrees outside atm.

Ah, glad to read it's all OK. Touch wood our leak has been fixed. Just got to keep a close eye on the boiler pressure and if it drops by a small amount he'll try leak stop stuff again in case there's some more small leaks hidden.

Have put some rads on here as it's blumming freezing.

Were your leaks in the pipes that run under the floorboards near the chimney breast?

We had a leak in a pipe that ran in front of the chimney breast a few years ago - totally my fault as i put a screw in the floorboard to fasten it down properly and stop it squeaking, i thought that it would be fine as there was a nail hole there and the nail was missing. It turns out that the nail hole must have been from before the heating was installed and i went straight through a water pipe :o It was just after we had moved in and i was there alone as DH worked nights then and over a couple of hours it dumped the contents of the full central heating system under the house :o 8 radiators lol. I can laugh about it now but it wasn`t funny at the time. Because we had only been there a couple of days i didn`t know where all the stop valves were.

It was fixed using a compression fitting on the water pipe - i didn`t know that you could get leak stop stuff  Do you just pour it in somewhere and it fixes leaks?

Fingers crossed for you that you don`t have any more trouble, its far too cold to be messing around with water leaks and drying out now BRRR!

Our heating is well and truly on, its 6 degrees outside and 18 inside atm, i`ve just had to venture down the garden to change the batteries in the wireless sensor and it feels absolutely freezing, it was only 4 degrees this morning when i went to w*rk:eek: I`m hoping that there will be no car scrapeing in the morning but i`m not holding my breath lol

Planning on starting the GC again soon :p
  • Still off! Not sure how much longer I can last though. It's 14c in here and we both have our slankets on and lots of candles lit. Any colder and it might have to go on.
