I'm the same! DH out at work & I'm a SAHM to 3 (although the eldest 2 are in school all day & DS till 11am & the heating will be on for him then. Still on now as its so cold. DH loves the house being hot but I'm always turning the heating down or off. Best thing is when I go to bed all warm with my hot water bottle I have to turn the heating off as the boiler is in out bedroom. So he either freezes down stairs (cos the gas fire won't light & hasn't done for 3 yrs!! - saving gas eh!!) or comes to bed with me & cuddles;):D;).

Our last 1/4 for gas was £140 - not bad I reckon but could be lower! We have prepay leccy - suits us as we're minus 1 bill bill. Water is OK at £250 per annum as we have 3 kids & on the Welsh Water Assist tarrif. Some benefit to having 3 kids!!:rotfl:
  • Oh the house is lovely and toasty, but I feel a bit guilty, will have to switch it off soon.

Well maybe another half hour wont hurt.
I so know how you feel!! I have put it on this morning as even though the sun is shining the house feels cold and until I get the fire on I need that extra heat. Once fire is on then the heating goes off. Why do we have this over developed sense of guilt I wonder when we do something so necessary as to putting the heating on! I have noone to answer to but my alter ego gives me a right rollocking when the bill comes in....LOL

Another half an hour wont hurt in this house either.......:(

Our heating is still on, but I went to the boiler and just nudged the dial down a bit more.

On the way back in to the house just outside the back door I stepped on something which crunched, and found a dead bird stuck to my shoe  I think it might have been an offering from our cat :rotfl:. Luckily I was wearing shoes (I do have a habit of walking around outside barefoot. When I was younger I trod on a slug with my bare feet. That was bad enough, but a dead bird )

I've turned my heating back on low at night, as my pc refuses to boot up when cold.
  • My heating is a sentient life form. It's calor gas and has never been reliable. Now it pleases it's self when it comes on and that's about once a week. Our engineer is at his wits end, he has had the whole thing in pieces whilst being on the phone to the technical support team at the Manufacture and they can not sort it out. So it's a multi fuel fire in the kitchen and electric radiators when totally desperate and I dare not even think about my electric bill I pay £110 a month at the moment. At least my 9 year old son is happy - no baths !

Might be cheaper to leave the pc on all night rather than the heating if thats all your leaving it on for.

  • I am quietly shortening the length of time the heating is on morning and evening, so far my family haven't noticed ;)

Managed to negotiate my oil delivery in December down from 74p per litre to 69. Shock of my life as this is double what we were paying a couple of years ago.

Have started using the multi fuel stove (have some chopped down trees lying around to use for logs plus some coal which has been in the shed for about 10 years). This does give the whole house a nice background warmth.

Am now making window quilts to keep out the draughts - can't double glaze as we are a listed building and haven't found any replacement authentic units.

Any other ideas for keeping heating costs down?

I'm surprised it's that high. Here on the Isle of Man it's rip-off island and we usually pay through the nose for everything, but our oil delivery was just under 52p per litre (the same as it was in July).
  • Mum and Dad called on Monday. I was quite warm, had the stove lit and plenty of layers on. Mum went over to the radiator and felt it then made some comment about oil prices! Started thinking "oh god, Mum and Dad are going to start worrying about us not being able to afford heating". So I went and put the heating on, then switched it off the minute they went home again.

Its actually been relatively mild here this week so I have been OK. We are using an electric heater to top up the heat in the living room rather than put the full heating on. So true what Mrs-Stressed says though, central heating has become a bit of a luxury for us and has to be used sparingly.
