Ok this isnt scientific as Im no scientist not a student of anything but i think my set up her is similar to yours and this is my experience

Two years ago we were reliant on oil only for heating. Oil was around 35-40p per litre. A fill of 1200 litres lasted us in the winter about 10 weeks max

    1200/10=120x37(average) = £44 a week

    Oil is now 55p ie 120x55= £110 a week

    120 x 55 = £66.00 NOT £110.00.............you seem to have added them together???

If I had the oil on all day

Now I have the oil on for 7 hours a day and a tank is lasting 20 weeks (winter months)

    1200/20=60x55 =£33 a week

Difference is I have the stove on all day - hundred weight of smokeless is £15 - lasts about 10 days

Oil - £33 plus coal @10.50 - heating for the week is now £43.50

Saving me over £50 a week ( if I were to have the heating on all day)

I time the heating so its off and on all day and night - the rads rarely get cold, all rooms are ok to walk around in with a tee shirt and it even comes on for 30 mins twice a night to stop the pipes freezing

The stove keeps the sitting areas toasty and my bedroom is so warm Im thinking of putting the 5 tog duvet back on

I am convinced that having the heating on all day is burning money I dont have. Timing it to come on for shorter periods through out the day is saving me money and I will not be convinced otherwise. The trick for me has been working out whens best for the heating to be on for the boots and it does take some fine tuning. Im lucky my time can have as many on and offs as I want in a 24hr period and Im also lucky that all our days here are the same - weekends have the same activity as weekdays

    Does that change your calculations???

120 times 55p equals £66 - you are right - Im a asleep :rotfl:(told you Im no student)

still Im a lot better off using the oil for 7 hours a day instead off on low for 24/7 as my heating cost now is still less then it was 2 years back - if only I were saving 50 quid a week - my mortgage would be paid :D

Still it can be that much of a saving as oil prices are very volatile and theres some who have paid a £1 a litre this winter

our heating will be on less as I have just read the meters and in the past six weeks between the electricity and gas we have used £248, but the heating didnt really get turned up or tumble dryer used until it snowed at the end of November, so I am guessing that the majority of this has been in the past 3-4 weeks. Our heating comes on at half six and goes off at half 8, then comes on at half four until half 9, however we have had it on low all the time when the temps were hitting minus 13 to minus 15. Fortunately we were £189 in credit so are now sitting at only £60 in debit with the next payment of £90 due on the 1st. This means we will probably be about £20 in credit on the first of January. I will check if I can do online payments and do one a week as I really dont want the direct debit going up any further.

  • I am sincerely hoping to knock off my heating January 1st. I can just rely on my wood buring stove. I am past my self with worry about my bills as I have had the heating on far more than ever (for November/Dec)and even though I have been at work (I dont have it on then) I still am worried. I had a new boiler put in two years and my bills say that I am using less gas but it still costs far more than before. In reality I dont think I shall get away with knocking it off TBH but I have to be proactive in not letting the energy I use run away with itself. My son came home very late the other night (after having driven for hours to get home) and he said that my bedroom felt hypothermic it was that cold. I was warm in bed though so I hadnt noticed except my head was a bit cold and the end of my nose was red (alledgedly). No wonder I am always ill.

I feel trapped at the mercy of 1) the weather 2) the energy suppliers and 3) the banks. Cant think of anyone else as I am too cold to think!! I am with EDF and on an Online Tariff Saver thing so it will be interesting to see what the actual bill is........

Put my reading into Imeasure and over the 6wks i have used £150.52p on gas and Elec i could have kept it lower but i need it on when grandchildren here, my Ds and wife have split up so there here quite a bit.Really pleased there's no probs over him having his children and i love them being here ,the prob is there home is boiling and they come over dressed in clothes suitable for there hot house so the heating has to go on.The hot water is now on twice since Ds has moved back in and i prob use the oven more which is electric ,that was a bad move much dearer than gas. I was worried when i saw how much i've used but comparing it with yrs it's prob not to bad ,mind you we hav'nt had to contend with the low temps you have if i had i expect bills would have been a lot higher.I'm currently paying £27 a mnth on gas and £26 on elec i'm hoping my payments go up as well.

The coldest two months are yet to come, I'm using this mild spell to cut back on the heating so I can have a bit more when it turns arctic again, as I am sure it will.

This mild spell would be a good time to re-stock on all the things we need should it turn snowy and icy again.
