Is your heating ON or OFF?

  • Here in freezing rural N Ireland, the heating's been on continuously since Friday - the radiator in the hall always, one other room downstairs in the daytime (unless I've lit the wood burner). The radiators upstairs haven't been on yet, don't think they will be as there's enough warmth built up. The forecast is for -9 in the daytime today, and freezing fog, and I've got to do a 40-mile round trip later, fortunately on main roads most of the way.... But yesterday at this time it was about -14, and my "works at up to -22" screen defroster liquid had frozen solid overnight!

Turkey gets it gas from neighbouring countries and the government here dictates the prices of everything--my electric bill for a family of 3--2 adults and a teenager comes to about 23 quid at this time of year and we use the dishwasher a lot!
    mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.

I don't know to be honest and I'm scared of sticking my neck out and saying X or Y and then you come home to no ceilings and a massive flood and I would be tortured with guilt forever and ever!

Well our oil boiler ( in the garage) froze solid the night before last ( I think it was around minus 12 in there) and although we got it thawed and working again, the plumber did advise I now kept it on low - around 12 - all night

Ive compromised and have left the heat settings the way they are and have timed it to come on for two 20 min bursts in the night - and its working grand - no frozen pipes since

It's scary though isn't it thinking about what the eventual nasty bill is going to be.

I'm just really thankful that I am able to heat my home to a comfortable temperature, real sympathy indeed for those on such a tight budget that can't. If I were in the same boat I'd just have to smile and get on with it, what other choice would I have?

Our heating has been on all the time for a while now. My DH is disabled and at home all the time, so he's got to be warm. At night time, we leave it on at 14 ºC and during the day it goes up to 17/18 ºC. The CH is oil which we've got to pay for in advance. Got a fill of the tank at the beginning of December which cost £420.

The house is nice and warm, but we put that down to the cavity wall insulation that was installed a year past in May.

I'm trying not to think about it. Fortunately for me, I have a decent amount coming in each month, so its not been too bad, but I still find myself adjusting thermostats, as my gas gets used at an alarming rate.
