Is your heating ON or OFF?

The coldest two months are yet to come, I'm using this mild spell to cut back on the heating so I can have a bit more when it turns arctic again, as I am sure it will.
This mild spell would be a good time to re-stock on all the things we need should it turn snowy and icy again.
I'm making the most of this mild spell as well. keeping heat off as much as poss.I hate the thought we still have cold months to come can't see this milder weather lasting it's hammering down with rain at the moment better than snow i surpose.
Happy new year to everyone0 -
I have said to Ds they need warmer clothes and i have bought them some for xmas,he's going to ask there mother to dress them in somthing a bit more suitable,he has to be careful what he says he dosn't want to rock the boat. There here today both in T-shirts  there on settee with blanket round them, they think it's great fun.
Maybe you could have a 'dress up' game at your house with fun but warm things gathered from charity shops, no boat rocking required.
They could leave 'the game' at your house too so no need to keep splashing out.0 -
I havent had the burner on so much (leaving it out during the day) and it appears the woodsman has been run ragged just before Christmas. He is almost haemorraging wood and is having people phone up from 40 miles away as everyone is running out!!!
Luckily, I am having another load delivered this week which will sit in the garage and if I get some more cash together will get another load fairly quickly. As this is my only form of heating I cannot afford to run out.
On a thermals note, I went to an outlet centre and managed to pick up some long sleeved thermals for half price so I am happy now0 -
I have pay as you go meters for gas and electricity. The electricity is always about the same £20 per week, but we used £100 in gas in December which is much more than usual. The heating has been on from 7am till whenever the last one goes to bed. Thanks to a week of temp of 6 degrees, which is 20 degrees warmer than 2 weeks ago I have now put it back on timed. One hour in the morning and 4 hours in the evening. I think this is now sufficient though with teenagers off school they keep putting it on during the day. Cant wait for them to go back and save some money.0

Our oil came, thank goodness. Tough its milder the house was getting quite damp feeling. I think I'm going to have to put aside my eco energy use concerns and think about a dehumidifier. The ones with frost control seem VERY expensive to buy though (and I will need to use it in cold places if I buy it, its kind of the point for us!)0

I am to scared to look at my electric meter and will worry about it in a few months (burying my head) They had to stick electric fires in my attic on full to melt the 4ft+ icicles and stop it damaging my pipes again, and in my utility room & bathroom to try and thaw all those pipes out. All wasted heat and not beneficial to warmth in the house at all. At one point the plumber set up some sort of device in the bathroom after pulling most of it out
a bit like a hair dryer on a pole so i dont imagine that was cheap at all.
And at one point we had to borrow an oil filled radiator 2000w which was on 24 hours a day for about 6 days to put heat into the actual house and we had a halogen heater on for a few days on full in the living room.
My landlord is paying for all the repairs -every water/ radiator pipe burst in all the different rooms of the house except dining room (coal fire is there) - whole house had no insulation at all or roof lining  and no double glazing or cavity wall insulation.
I will have to pay for all the electric though :eek:Grocery Challenge - Jan £4.42/£200.00
Up my income - £124.00/ £11,000.0 -
Turned the storage heater back down to 1 when the mild weather started, although it looks like its gonna be cold tonight, so might have to turn it back up to 1 1/2 or 2 (was up to 3 when we had the -8 weather last week!)
DS's room has been kept at 17 degrees so he's not too hot in bed!
I'm more worried about all the tumble drying I've been doing lately

Thats a good idea bluebag but sadly my Ds has returned ti his wife i know saying sadley sounds awfull butsits a long story and its not good ,i'm really upset about it.The electric bill will go down without all his stuff not on standby and the heating will not be on much now as the children were here alot.I would have rather had the higher bills.0 -
Oh god I am so worried about you all. Your posts are just so tragic and I wish I could something to help (like paying your bills). We are all in this together and I dont honestly think anyone cares - lets start with the government then lets go onto the energy suppliers. There has been not a pip from either about how they are going to help. The elderley even have to half freeze to death and then have to prove that the weather was below freezing for a certain amount of days. What happens if it creeps up one degree - does that mean they dont get the £ help they need. Disgraceful. It must be a lovely warm, glowing feeling sitting in your heated car (with heated seats) driving from one heated place to another, and then sitting in one heated palatial place after another and then going home to the heating full on (for the kiddies). And cooking copious amounts of warm food for everyone. After eating in the works dining room (its a canteen where I come from) a nice hot tasty, nutritious meal without a care in the world. These people have no concept whatsoever of bust pipes, freezing houses, ice on the inside of windows (rotten at that), and then have to pay through the nose for the privilege.
Sorry everyone, I think that was a rant! But I do despair when I read your posts and I do sincerely hope that help is being offered beyond community or family for you all and lets hope the next bout of sh**tty weather isnt quite as bad as we fear...
love and admiration to you all mrs s0 -
Have just asked OH to have a look in the oil tank. He reckons we have used half of the oil we got delivered in December. This means about 375 litres x 62p = £232.50 over 5 weeks. That amount of oil would normally last us at least 8 weeks but with it being so cold and everyone at home over Christmas its not surprising.
We are also using about £12 worth of coal a week so that makes a total of just under £60 a week, without electric.
Dont know how that compares to anyone else. We need to get our cavity walls insulated, but not sure how much difference it will make.0
