just wondering what temperature people have their boiler for heating and hot water set at??
new to renting and this flat does not have a thermostat on the wall just boiler temp and then each radiator has own setting 1-5. So any suggestions on keeping bills down much appreciated.
thanx in advance

This is like our house. Now that I'm leaving it on low our rads are on full but the boiler is only set to 50 degrees farenheit. I have no idea of the most efficient way to do it technically but experimentally this is working for us ATM.0 -

Have done of bit of research re the weather, a respected astrophysicist Piers Corbyn turned weather forecaster (who did go against the grain and predicted last January's cold snap) has also predicted this winter to be one of the 3 coldest for 100 years! Always sceptical with anything that any 'expert' tells us, but lets hope he's wrong.
See the forecast here if interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHPooN0DZ5Y&feature=recentu
Regardless going to stock up on a few cans of this and that, and fill the freezer up just in case!
Thanks,I've just had a look at this forecast, very interesting.
Well, here it has gone up to 10c outside, overcast and rainy. No need for any heating!0 -
I think that the cold spell that we are having now has been colder than Jan/Feb 2010...??perhaps its my amagination ..... but it feels like it though......I bet the poor folks in Scotland KNOW its more colder this time a round......I sure feel for all of you up north.....
i'm one of those poor folk in scotland (Fife) and yes it's worse than last year, noticeably so!0 -
I am further north and its been as bad here and I see people setting their boilers to 50 degrees I think hot water needs to be set at 60 for fear of legionella in the shower water if I am not mistaken - Sorry if I am wrong there! - my house has a thermostat in lounge and its at 21 and trv on all but the rad in the bathroom - its the nicest room in the house - roasting and lovely!Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j0

To put to bed the debate on if its cheaper to keep the heating on low all day, next week going to do a little experiment and leave my heating on low during the day and track my useage, and compare to a normal week of 3 and a half hours per day, will report back on my findings!
This is what I meant to do - but forgot. I did however remember to read the meter from Sunday to Sunday, and will be doing so every Sunday (I've written it on my kitchen board in an effort to remember) to give me some idea of how much we are using.
We should - I hope - be using less than last year, as last year, it came on every day from 6.30am-9am and then again from 4.45pm - 9.45pm and the thermostat was set to 20º
Having it on all night at 12º (to stops pipes freezing, but it seldom fires up) and during the day at 14-15º and then on the bitterly cold evenings an hour or so at 18º is hopefully using less than 7½hours every day @ 20º
So I'd be very interested to see what the outcome of your experiment isAug11 £193.29/£240
