Debtmess - If it were he with no heating then I bet he would call an emergency plumber - he is doing this because he thinks you will put up with it.... DON'T!!!!! He is more than likely in breach of his contract and if you withheld rent because of it, there would be very little he could do.
I would tell him that if he doesn't send someone to fix it within 24 hours then you will get somebody yourself, and take the money from next months rent
He he..... sorry frugal, it was Tulip that had the heating problem. I was responding to debtmess agreeing with me that the landlord should be providing some means of heating...confusing no?0 -
im very lucky in that my currant landlord is very good at sorting anything that needs sorting, my son unknown to me dropped something down the loo, of course after that we had the joys of water filled loo, my landlord for someone out within a few hours, and wouldn't let me foot the bill for what had caused the problem (it was our fault iykwim)
few weeks ago woke up with no power (turns out was a fuse wire) rung him at 8am sorted by 10.30
Tulip id be hounding him, as said oil or halogen rads wouldn't set him back much x tell him to get his bottom to robert dyas where 2 fan heaters will set him back 19.98 !Debt free

We got our ancient boiler fired up for the first time yesterday, then discovered it cost us £6ish to run it for the whole day (£200 a month ) so have turned it off again. Going to pop it on for an hour or so as and when we need it, but other than that it's just lots of layers, blankets and cups of tea for me this winter0

Not been as cold today and heatings just gone off for tonight. Double glazed but have vents on the window surround and even when they're shut, there's still a draught from them. Been going round taping them up (without OH knowing)...he thinks they should be open for part of the day ..I'll open windows up a bit for fresh air.
By the way, how do you change the signature?GC - Oct £36.17/£31

The difference people report in energy use when they get double pane windows is probably down to the reduced air leaks and the better thermal resistance of the glass, but I suspect most of the improvements in comfort are from the reduction in air leaks.
I have big old windows from the late 60s or early 70s which have a fairly bad energy rating, but they're well made casements with good seals and have no draughts. I'm sure this does make a big difference compared to other houses I've lived in where sitting anywhere near a window felt cold because of the air coming in from outside, so would highly recommend getting some of those draught excluder strips for your windows and sealing other gaps.
It doesn't have to be expensive either. Last time I was in poundland I saw self adhesive foam draught strips and tubes of silicone sealant (possibly not the best stuff for around the edge of your bath or outside use, but fine for sealing around inside of window edges and other gaps).
The other half has already bought those strips and will fit them tomorrow. Hopefully they will be a big helpMain problem however is that the windows are NOT good/ well made etc.. they are rotting and have holes in the corners of some of them. This is a grade 2 listed building. Landlord doesn't seem to think any of this is a problem
The only thing we know for sure, is that we know nothing0 -
Hi
Been off for a couple of hours. It's not as cold as last night and all the snow has cleared.:j:jSealed Pot Challenge No 089-Finally got a signature.:rotfl::j0 -
Thanks for the advice
They are not open until Tuesday but we managed to get a taxi to the nearest town this afternoon and buy a 10kg bag of coal & a bag of logs and tomorrow a family member is going to drop a heater off for us and try and source more coal, in the meantime we have moved some mattresses into the diningroom and are all huddled in there keeping warmish. The landlord is usually ok but he is away and his wife is dealing with it all just now, she wouldlt like boiling a kettle to get hot water but she thinks its a viable exception for us!
