I wish i could put my heater on :( My heating has broke and the landlord has got someone to come and fix it on the 13th December. I have a coal fire (i had never used it till yesterday) and enough coal in the bunker for yesterday. Tried to get a taxi into the nearest town to buy some coal/firelighters etc and they wont come to my village because of the roads (hopefully they will come later on today) We have resorted to setting fire to a little coal & oldish clothes now until we can get to town, plus hats/ scarves/ gloves in the house. The room we are in has actually gone to 5 Degrees now:T and hopefully will climb more and we can get to the shops today.
    Grocery Challenge - Jan £4.42/£200.00

    Up my income - £124.00/ £11,000.
  • I turned the stove off at 8.30 as it switches on at 5am via a timer. It feels warmer today but it is dark and miserable out. We have been flying through the wood pellets and saw the news last night re several more weeks of the freeze  so I have just spent the winter fuel payment on a tonne of fuel. This is the only form of heating in the house, apart from the sun. Its a new house

I used to build up spare money in the electricity/gas account via the higher DDs which I never queried because I wanted to be warm enough in winter. I don`t pay monthly DDs now just upfront for the pellets and on demand for the electricity

Got it on 9 hours per day since 3 days ago :( It's hideously expensive (calor gas LPG bulk tank) but our barn conversion flat is a draft magnet with no double glazing!!!

The difference people report in energy use when they get double pane windows is probably down to the reduced air leaks and the better thermal resistance of the glass, but I suspect most of the improvements in comfort are from the reduction in air leaks.

I have big old windows from the late 60s or early 70s which have a fairly bad energy rating, but they're well made casements with good seals and have no draughts. I'm sure this does make a big difference compared to other houses I've lived in where sitting anywhere near a window felt cold because of the air coming in from outside, so would highly recommend getting some of those draught excluder strips for your windows and sealing other gaps.

It doesn't have to be expensive either. Last time I was in poundland I saw self adhesive foam draught strips and tubes of silicone sealant (possibly not the best stuff for around the edge of your bath or outside use, but fine for sealing around inside of window edges and other gaps).

You down south then Slipthru? It's supposed to be 7º in my area tomorrow too. I also prefer to sleep with the bedroom window open, but it's been way too cold to do that for the past few nights, it's been bitterly, bitterly cold.

I'm in Dorset and I love the snow! We finally had some yesterday :j but as I'm typing this, it's blowing a gale outside and rain is hammering on the patio doors, so it barely had the chance to settle before it's all gone again :(

Apparently is supposed to rain all day tomorrow with a high of 7º

Give me cold, dry, bright weather over mild, miserable wet weather any day. I HATE the rain, it's so depressing.

I'm in east kent, Snow has disapeared now and it's pooring with rain, boo.

    I hate the rain also.
    In Progress!!!

Your landlord has an obligation to provide you with some sort of heating until the heating is fixed, especially in this weather.

You should not be burning old clothes to keep warm and 5c is quite dangerous, I should get back on to you landlord, tell him how cold it is and that you don't have any heating and ask him for some sort of temporary heater.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Well, its less cold here, but not by any means warmand the rain follows into the back hall when we go in and out. I have wet doggy towels from all the wiping of dog feet. For me there is no doubt this weather is worse!

Because we managed to light the woodburner the heating has been on its lowest 50 degree setting since yesterday afternoon and I have just lit the burner again. The sitting room was lovely and warm this morning I was so sad we couldn't sit inside and enjoy it! Also I think this has made the biggest difference to our condensation, even though its not in the worst rooms for that.

So when its been on a while I'll put a big bowl of water near it for DH's skin :( not to dry out and we'll enjoy the fire.Somehow, even though its as drying, real fire seems a nicer sort of heat to me, albeit a luxury. :)

Even though the snow has gone and the rain is falling we still ave an awful lot of ice. Take care everyone, and don't be fooled into thinking it'll feel much better tonight if you've had a thaw.

Yeah, dead right, the landlord is taking the mick, he has to provide a means of heating as it's part of what you pay rent for.

He is failing his side of the contract, and needs reminding.

A few oil filled radiators or a halogen or two would set him back 40 quid or so and maybe an hour or two to drop them off.

Cheeky beggar, I bet he still wants the full rent though.

Debtmess - If it were he with no heating then I bet he would call an emergency plumber - he is doing this because he thinks you will put up with it.... DON'T!!!!! He is more than likely in breach of his contract and if you withheld rent because of it, there would be very little he could do.

I would tell him that if he doesn't send someone to fix it within 24 hours then you will get somebody yourself, and take the money from next months rent ;)
