Is your heating ON or OFF?

I'm more concerned about people with ill health or who are in extremely terrible weather conditions who can't afford heat OR who are risking greater financial risk(frozen pipes, damp etc) and health risks than I am the odd nutter like me who wants to spend a minimum on oil so I can spend another way
. The only competition for me is against myself.
It can't be anything else to my view as we live in different sorts of homes and areas and have difernt needs.
very little i can cut back on, the only 'luxury' we have is virgin package
my meter eats gas as simple as that, were not freezing as such, im just a little careful with it, if i had it on full all day everyday id hate to think what id need to top up every week
my flat has no insulation, holes in wall, a open chimney (but no fire under it) 3 outside walls so im effectively poring money down the drain if i have heating on too muchDebt free

Have you tried blocking up the chimney yet?
We
are hoping to return a couple of fireplaces to open fires and asked our surveyor about this (the draughty chimneys in this thread in mind) an he said done properly at the start we'll be ok, there is a way to shut them off when not in use. Not good for most people, but if you are tearing a house apart its the right time to think about it. Its thanks to posters like you I even thought of the problem in advance to find a solution to, so thank you!0 -
my friend has an old duvet, when the snow clears i can get it reluctant to do much as my tenancy runs out next month (jan 28th) and hopeing landlord finds me a bigger place in his 52 properties lol, still im very grateful for where i live this winter, i don't miss my damp 3 bed house i gave up for this much smaller place, i don't have to scrub damp and mould off the walls weekly or have such ill childrenDebt free

My heating is on now - as soon as I got in from working in a chilly office! (I'm part time there and the halogen heater only goes on when I get in... and as I'm self-employed, the normal rules don't seem to apply to me... on Monday, there was steam coming out of the laser printer when I'd run through some pages!)
Radiators are only on in the hall and one room downstairs, I still haven't weakened enough to put the bedroom ones on, and the bathroom has been put on a couple of times. But I'm cocooned in winter woolies, and have started to knit some more...0 -

Now clearly that WILL be the case with some folks but I think I would get rid of other things first before heating. So, is everyone here just so badly off that they can't heat their house? Or is this some sort of strange competition going on?
Read my posts, im with you on this one.....0 -

some people just cannot afford the big bills that WILL arrive as a result of this cold spell. Get real shegar, not everyone is in the fortunate position that others are in, including me, where we can afford to stay warm. It is all about empathy on this thread.
Pity help them. I am sure they know about the bad effects of being cold without anyone preaching to them0 -
My heating is on 24 hours each day at present:eek: 22C during the day and 21C during the night. My philosophy is we will not be cold no matter what. I find that having it on all the time works out marginally more than on for a few hours in the morning, then again in the afternoon/evening. On and off the boiler has to work harder raising the temperature twice a day, but keeping it on all the time maintains the temperature with no peaks! To Dare is To Do:beer:0

Do people know how many kWh they're using a day on average?
In Nov, my average was 30 kWh a day, but I fear Dec will be much higher. Will read the meters at the end of the weekend.Mortgage£148,725 Student loan£13,050 HSBC loan£12,221

Indeed, I'm flabbergasted at the amount of family and friends who have their heating on full blast, wander around in shorts and t-shirts and yet still moan about the cost:eek:
None the less, making sure you stay healthy is the most important thing0
