  • I'm still hanging in there, tho' my OH thinks that it's getting a bit too much for him altho' I mentioned to him that we'll have it when it's minus 5 but having so far w/o the heating, and we're in minus 5 now, I want to make us last till we're really suffering. Am wearing polo work shirt with Berghaus fleece jacket and fleece dressing gown (also woolly tights and knee high socks and soft fleecy-type ankle slippers). It's ok by me to feel this way as my core temp. is fine but for OH he's just not wearing as many layers as I am, but I can't make him tho'. Any solutions?

Yes, I have.... Put your heating on.

I don't understand why you want to wait until "we're really suffering"

well, we're living on a single low-paid wage atm (mine) and I'm not sure whether I'll still have a job to go to in the new year. I've had to do away with Sky and the TV so far, and eating more frugally (no expensive cuts of meat etc. we cook from scratch btw), and also no treats like cafes, meals out...and (gasp, horror!!) no presents this year for my siblings children... yes, that's a bit too far, you might say, but I've made lots of jars of preserves from foraged fruit this autumn and the family will receive those instead (might make cookies and cakes too but that depends on time)...

I hope this might give you a good idea how things are dire for us this year as out budget has been slashed by about 15 grand in the last 3mths. Paying the bills have been v hard, but so far we're still in the 'black' and we have no intention of straying from it:o

NB. my siblings and my only child, a 19yo daughter have all accepted my decision to not afford presents and are pleased with the way we're coping. Their kids are quite spoilt (expensive brands on clothes, games, tennis lessons etc). DD is fine about it too as her father's family have always given thoughtful presents like woolly scarves, books etc., which she's always appreciated.

:o Oh dear. Sorry to hear that. Its dreadful that anyone should have to suffer from the cold.

I really hope you don't lose your job, and that your OH gets another job very soon.

I am going to bulgaria (near the Romanian side by the moutains, Snows for about 2 whole months and gets colder then here but has a really long summer) but the house is a really old cottage with no heating, hot water or inside toilet and the roof and windows arn't to clever either.

It has a long drop cesspit toilet in the garden and an old stove in the house ( only 3 rooms though so it should help) There is a wood burning shower as well which should be fun.

We are trying to get use to managing without just being able to turn stuff on at will. There is no gas out there at all and the electric in the village is hit and miss so it is really back to basics with candles and storm lamps.

    Can't wait...lol

All that and 1/4 acre of land and a stream at the bottom of the garden with a forest 15 minute walk away
    There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.

    dogstarheaven,
I have had times when I wasn't in the black and the bailiffs were knocking, I would heat one room rather than risk my health.

A 1200w halogen heater on full setting for 8 hours a day at 10p per kwh would cost £6.72p a week, that would allow you to keep one room warm using the heat in the coldest hours of the day.

Really sorry to hear that..I think it is a good thing you are trying to do by not getting into debt ( can't say the same myself as I am up to my neck in it) but please make sure you are well.
I know that might sound odd coming from someone who also does not have the heating on but I am honestly not cold and have houses on both sides of me and in somewhat of a dip ( always seems to be slightly warmer here then in town ) I also have the dogs and cats and that really also does help as I make the poor sods come to bed with me and warm my feet...tee hee

Just take care of you and yours and make sure you stay safe

Sounds fabulous, something of a major culture change. Never heard of a wood burning shower (off to google it...)
Hope you have a very happy new home.

I would have the heating up full blast here while I could.:)
