Is your heating ON or OFF?

We've got used to hot water bottles etc but OH had a friend over from work on Wednesday and she was cold so I put it on. Didn't make a blind bit of difference. I only put one radiator on, but it was the bigger one. The smaller one is under the window but is practically covered by a long coffee table full of dvds and games so it's no use having it on just so it can melt the dvds and not heat the room. We've got sash windows, thought they'd be alright because they're double glazed but I think we'll be a lot warmer if I can winter-proof them a bit, so that's my job for the weekend.
We're still toasty warm under the duvet with hot water bottles and slippers and everything but I'm annoyed that I can't make it warmer for guests. Probably see if I can move the coffee table somewhere. As for snow, no sign of it and we've a cupboard stocked full if it does make an appearance!
If you are cold and can afford it then tbh I think you should move the table and dvds (just pull it awat from the wall) and get the heating on. And I'm very pro holding out as much as possible! If your walls etc are cold then it may well take a very long time to warm up, more than an hour or two..perhaps even 24 hours if you have solid walls.
Be frugal, be heating aware, but be sensible.
Here the heating warmed up the house last night for two hours. The condensation isn't as bad to day, but upstairs where its worse, is airing now. The house is ok for warmth for us. The dusting of snow last night has shown us that over our cold bedroom is actually quite ok, not loosing to much heat...or not warming up enough to lose anything! But the area over our single storey kitchen..the warmest roomin our house, is totally snow free.. There is no hatch to up there to put anything up there BUT DH has suggested making a neat hole in the ceiling (which he could then cover) and getting some insulation up there to hold the heat in. Not sure if I can cope with the mess this weekend: we are having people for supper tomorrow and our ''team'' to start plans for renovating the house on Monday...I don't wnt the architect to think we are starting without him!:D

I have a portable Calor gas fire and it's great for heating the place up quick. But then again I don't have any small children. I got rid of one we had years ago, as I was too scared when they were little.
Edited to add: I got rid of a calor gas fire, not one of my children lol
I know what sort of portable gas fire your talking about, my sons have them , but they pay £29 per bottle....:eek::eek::eek: phew thats a helluver lot of dosh.0 -

Woke up this morning with condensation swimming down the windows so I've moved the dvd table, whacked the heating on for 2 hours and what a difference that little radiator makes! Will be putting it on for a couple of hours a day now.Times is 'ard.0 -
Wow, i cant believe so much of Britain has lots of snow, we have none at all, just had thick frosts but i can happily live with that.
Its been clear skies for days here, sunshine beaming in but its bloomin' cold. The sun doesn't heat up the room any longer as its so low it disappears behind the tree down the way.
Good luck for those of you with snow and keep warm0 -

No snow here either, but my word it's bitterly cold. What watery sunshine we have is more or less gone by about 2:30 so I tend to put the heating on about 3ish.
I heat the room I'm in with the little gas wall heater, not that warm, but OK while I'm tidying up and emptying the bins and what not.
It got down to -6 here last night, so kept the heating on quite late.
Kind thoughts to all those with snow...stay safe, it's very pretty, but dangerous stuff.0 -
Snow here and heating still off. Hardly any damp but the house has more drafts then a cheese grater so it keeps that part down. To be honest (I do understand those that are worried or say it should go on) I really am not that cold, I have a duvet and blanket for tv watching, the dogs have coats and blankets and the kitten sleeps under the duvet anyway.
If I were going to stay here I would turn it on but as the move is going to mean a harsher winter without any heating or on tap hot water this seems the best way to get ready for it.
I keep the curtains drawn once it gets slightly dark and have a hat, gloves etc warm food every day so it aint all that scary reallyThere is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

Good, glad its worked for you!
tbh the heating doesn't really seem to have a reliable impact on our condensation otherwise I think I'd put heating on more regularly! However, our heating has been on to day because I put it on while ''nipping out'' to the minor injuries unit and ended up being there for HOURS.0 -

Mine usually lasts 6 weeks. The gas costs me £25 - £1 extra if I want it delivered. I usually strap it into the back seat and drive my bomb up the road. Wouldn't do it in these slippy roads though. I wouldn't do it if I lived miles from the shop either.0 -
Our stove is on all day today but I did turn its thermostat down to 20 and I have turned the tiny little rad on in the bedroom. It is only about 6 inches high so not much heat given out. Its amazing that the house is heated by this stove plus hot water and all we`ll have to clear will be a handful of wood ash. It uses wood pellets, like horse food and they go into a hopper. I`ve turned it off now and will vaccuum the ash out and clear the burner as it will go on again afterwards until 11 and again on every day through the freeze at 6 am until 11pm. At least that is the prog that I`ll give it. Pity help all those who are freezing but don`t really know it, like the immobile. Its so important not to be breathing in freezing air as he body core will get cold so people will die0
