    ellanutella,

Maybe you could have a powerful fan heater just for guests, would be too expensive to run it long term. They heat up a place fast and one with a thermostat would just keep the heat level and stop the bright blue guest scenario.

They aren't expensive to buy and are always useful if the heating packs up. A beefy 3kw one would cost about 30p an hour to run, so not good for 15 hours a day - 7 days a week heating, but OK for a few hours when you have people over.

I have a portable Calor gas fire and it's great for heating the place up quick. But then again I don't have any small children. I got rid of one we had years ago, as I was too scared when they were little.

Edited to add: I got rid of a calor gas fire, not one of my children lol

We have white out conditions already tonight and lots and lots of snow - hopefully people will keep OFF the roads as half of them cannot drive on the stuff and cause problems for others who can! - I will be staying in with my supplies and keeping warm hopefully - nothing like shovelling snow to warm you up though!

The heating is cranked up - we need to be warm!

weather has turned nasty here in fife, it had been snowing but we just had about an hour of heavy sleet pelting the windows, it's going to be an ice rink tomorrow.

after reading the report from piers posted above i decided to crank up the input on both my storage heaters... if we lose electric due to a lot of ice on the powerlines it's gonna get bloody freezing in this house!

Argos have a convector heater on offer for £17.99 with very good reviews, would be ideal for short-term when you've got visitors.

Good grief! it's bad enough in the frozen norf without losing the electric.

Will be thinking of you if that awful storm thingy hits. I live in a house with gas so I have never had that situation, we would lose the central heating as the boiler has an electric pump, but I have a gas wall heater that would tide us over.

    I think I would die without heating!

we actually did just lose the electricity for about 10 seconds, but it was only on one circuit as our xmas light stayed on (yes it's early but the wee one begged me!) so that was probably just a power surge... but i've never had a power surge here so maybe something happened somewhere down the line... better to be prepared!

Good luck, just read your post on the other thread about sorting out your emergency lighting box... sounds like good thinking.

It's -5 and dropping here, unreal. The frost is as thick as a butchers pencil. Just going to tog up to go on the step for a fag, I may need emergency hypothermia treatment when I come in.LOL.

God help the homeless in all this, I must remember to donate a few bob to the sally army.

Don't want to scare you but read this  This man has been spot on for years

    WeatherAction Extreme Weather Warning

Catastrophically severe blizzards - "widespread total white out" coming to much of Britain, Ireland, Europe and North/central USA during 27th-30th - much more intense than standard meteorology expectations.

Piers Corbyn, astrophysicist of WeatherAction long range forecasters said today, Frid 26 Nov
"We repeat our warning on 24th Nov that the period 27-30 Nov espec from 28th onwards will - due to solar-magnetic factors - suffer considerably more extreme weather than standard meteorology expectations and advised people to, for example, DOUBLE snow forecast levels which might be issued on TV on Friday.
This means the 10-20cm (4 to 8 inches) Met Office warning (issued Frid 26th) for NorthEast Britain especially North & NorthEast England for Sunday 28th should be DOUBLED to 8 to 16 inches.
"This means we can expect at least a foot of snow, total white-out and heavy drifting and the areas covered will be much wider than their present forecast with probably the whole of the UK and most of Ireland suffering extreme conditions.
"For the USA there will be catastrophically severe total white-out conditions in wide areas in the period 28th-30th

"WeatherAction's essence of winter summary public forecast will be released on Tuesday 30th Nov - see http://www.weatheraction.com/displayarticle.asp?a=274&c=5 "

WARNING!!! I buy Piers forecasts and believe me this WILL happen every time on those forecasts that Piers has warned about HAS happened i would say 95% of the time so i for one am preparing for this scenario and have warned work colleagues

Thanks for posting that! 40cm of snow just seems totally crazy but I can see it happening! I have come to the conclusion that most standard forecasts are rubbish. We have been forecasted snow for the past five days now and it hasn't turned up. Last night we weren't forecast any, I woke up and it had snowed!

Meant to say I'm a bit worried about how much I've had heating on. I was in all day yesterday so had the heating on for about 3 hours in the morning and then from about 3.30 until 12 in the evening! That's going to be so expensive. It's just so, so cold now!

We have at least a foot of snow, the heating has been on but has been on low.

The house is ok so I have turned it off for a few hours as son is still in bed, but will probably have it on low most of the day.

I have a bit of credit on my gas account so hopefully that will help with the latest old spell
