Gas fire went straight on this morning and now its lovely and warm in the living room. It will stay on till children get home from school then will put CH on for a while whilst homework/tea is done.

    Keep warm

I may be wrong (probably am :o ) but I was told that having the gas fire on was more expensive than having your central heating on?

I suppose the type of fire could make a difference. My last one was a living flame one and I was told that was more expensive. I have a similar one in this house too. The only time I put my one on is to get a quick heat up if the CH hasn't had time to kick in.

Fire is now on permanently and this week I have been keeping it in day and night so at least it is warm when I get in from work rather than freezing to death. It wont be like that forever though.

Thank you for the information about fire v ch. I think I'll stick to the fire whilst the upstairs windows are open. I like to thoroughly air the house in a morning as we get condensation. Then I'll turn the fire off and put the ch on when I close the windows.

Ours is off during the day except at the weekend because I'm trying to conserve what oil we have left and see if it can last all winter. At the moment I have a warm, furry, feeling-sorry-for-myself cat on my knee so that helps. He came in this morning limping badly, with a front paw so swollen you could club someone with it! I've taken him to the vet and he's on anti-biotics, so hopefully he'll be feeling better soon.

My WM packed in on Saturday, so I've been washing by hand all week. It wouldn't be so bad if I had a mangle. My fingers now have lots of little cuts in them from being constantly wet and cold and it's painful doing the washing. I've been told that it's the motor which has broken, so the estate agent is organising a new machine - soon I hope as I have beds to change tomorrow

Poor little cat. Re washing, do you really need to wash so much in an emergency? Can you restrict to washing underwear and just go an extra few days with the sheets? I'm a clean sheet freak, but I'd wait for a machine rather than wash them by hand in this cold when there will be an easier way in a few days. They'll probably not be dry washed and wrung by hand until when they would be washed and spun out then hung if you get a new machine on Monday!

I think I'm going to have to leave the bedding for a few more days. It won't kill anybody. I know some people will think changing them every week is a bit too much (my sister says she changes theirs once a month ).

Our CH is on for an hour in the morning (low setting) to take the chill off and give hot water then off all day until 5pm until 9pm with a one hour off period so it's on for 4 hours during the week but longer during weekends because SWMBO is home.!! I tend to spend the day in my "box-room" office which has a Halogen heater in it. I find that I just need the heater on a couple of times on the 400W setting to keep the chill out. On the 400W setting it uses just less than 2p of electricity per hour according to my "power plug".
