    OMG What an adventure!!!!!

Sounds idyllic, if a little chilly !!! Any internet access so you can update us? :D

Oddly enough, can't get gas or mains sewerage but broadband is coming to village..lol Go figure

There is also a McD's with Wifi in the nearest town (about 20 minutes by bus and the buses are much better there for some reason)

I am quite looking forward to it, We are going with limited funds and are going for the full good life. Growing our own and keeping chucks etc so if nothing else it will be a hell of a crash diet and I should be able to get back into those things I have not been able to get on for several years:o

Sounds fabulous, something of a major culture change. Never heard of a wood burning shower (off to google it...)
Hope you have a very happy new home.

I would have the heating up full blast here while I could.:)

The shower is like a big tank..Water fills it from the top and the fire is lit at the bottom. shower head as normal really but you only get the one tank of hot water and you can then mix it with cold through the shower head section.
It is a home made job based on the old Gypsy / traveller tank showers.

Heats the room a treat in the winter but cooks you alive in the summer. Great for drying clothes though

    dogstarheaven,
I have had times when I wasn't in the black and the bailiffs were knocking, I would heat one room rather than risk my health.

A 1200w halogen heater on full setting for 8 hours a day at 10p per kwh would cost £6.72p a week, that would allow you to keep one room warm using the heat in the coldest hours of the day.

my health isn't all that great. usually at this time of year, i get chilblains on my fingers and toes, but so far (cold fingers and toes crossed! not really as i've just got out of a long, hot bath) i've gotten away with it so far. having the gas fire on for the main room that we occupy in at nights isn't really worth it as we have floorboards, and the heat wouldn't retain v well. once i've had a hot bath tho', i'm so super-toasty that my body stays warm for a long time till i get to bed. so it isn't that bad after all.

thanks for your consideration, Frugal. OH is trying v hard for finding work, but it's v tough when there's nothing about.

    dogstarheaven,

Please be careful with the heating, its very, very cold just now and you both don't sound in the best of health. Try and keep as warm as you can, sometimes it's better to keep just a little low heat on.

Are you sure you are claiming all the benefits you are entitled to? With a single low wage I'm sure you must be entitled to something.
Good luck with the job hunting, it's very tough at the moment.

Nah, I can't either, just my heads up computer display shows it in archaic fahenheit, I have to do the conversion twaddle.

Must get the OH to change it to centigtade for me. I'm too much of a luddite to be able to do it myself.
  • Please put the heating on :)

It's -7 here tonight! Although Real Feel is actually higher at -5. Never seen it that way before.

The snow we had this morning pretty much melted away in most places, however, our car is parked on a side street which must not get much sunlight. I tried to go to Tesco this evening and realised I didn't stand a chance. There was a huge thick layer of snow on the windscreen that had frozen over so I didn't stand a chance of getting it off. Also that side road was a complete sheet of ice.

Most of the other roads were OK but pavements were a bit patchy. No idea if we will get any more snow now. Don't trust the forecasts!
