I have no choice but to put the heating on, North east Scotland weather is not really warm at this time of year.

i just need to sort this fireplace problem the wind is howling down and its going to cause my flat to go colder quicker. thermostat is on 13 for the night so anything under it will click on , on its own

on the preparing for winter thread several people swear by wrapping an old pillow up in a bin bag with some string around it. shove it up inside the chimney but leave the string down so you can see it as a reminder to remove it if you want a fire...

they say it works a treat!

goodness i don't blame you, we went up to aberdeen in the half term holiday last year and it was freezing cold in mid october! i had to have the heating on in our hotel room and i'm from the Fife area so it's not like i'm unaccustomed to the cold!

i didn't turn ours on last night but the night before i'd only had one heater on for about 3 hours i think it was and so today it was really nippy as the storage heaters only hold their heat for *just* about 24 hours if you keep the output low.

i did a lot of cooking to take the edge off and the one hall heater is on tonight. i was just going to leave it on for about 4 hours but i'd like a bath tomorrow and i don't want to shiver through it so i'm 'treating' myself to a full 7 hours of heat from the one radiator :T

Still on here but on the thermostat so it only clicks on when it needs to.

Its very very windy outside but the outside temperature is showing as 5 degrees - certainly seems a lot colder. *wonders if she dare risk putting washing outside*

Inside is 18 degrees which is just fine, i`ve just turned the dehumidifier on in the kitchen as we seem to be getting rain driven in by the wind somewhere around the door frame, not sure where from exactly but the demid will take care of it. Next year we are having the whole door and frame replaced *crosses fingers* so hopefully the problem will be solved then.

I need to go our later, firstly to walk the woofaloes and secondly to the shops and i`m really not looking forward to it, it sounds very scary outside.

    Keep warm and safe peeps.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Heating off last night and no condensation, even on the windows I didn't use wasing up liquid on. It is a riddle! (dh reckons the ventilation from the draughts in the house from gales outside was keeping it dryer....)

I live in rural Wales and suffer with oil fired central heating! Had a brand new all singin all dancing so called "efficient" boiler fitted last year, it does use a little less than the old one but not much!!

I refuse to have oiled delivered to my house as the "robbing" oil companies round here want £100 a month by direct debit even in summer!!!!! I have found an old fashioned garage where I can go and fill up 25 litre containers and the pour it into the oil tank myself, it probably doesn't save any money but because I dont have the direct debit every month it feels as though it does and we seem to be a lot more frugal with the heating as the garage is 50 miles away :(

Anyhow I get 100 litres at a time which lasts about a month, we have just run out lol so much for being prepared so off tomorrown for some more I am going to buy another 2 containers tomorrow so I can then get 150 litres at a time then when I go again I will get another 2 containers so can get 200 litres in one go.

Oil is so expensive now it is unbelievable, going back 6 or 7 years ago we could have 500 litres delivered for about £120 ish now its more like £295!!!!!

Anyway rant over.................. We have had the heating on, on and off for the last 4 weeks had some very cold weather and the wind uhhhhhhhhh it is always windy anyway where I live as we live right next to the sea but the wind so far over the last couple of weeks has been more like the massive January wind we get than a gentle October/November breeze :(

We also had cavity wall insulation last year and loft insulation all topped up so far it has made no difference whatsoever in heating cost or keeping heat in a bit of a waste of good money so far me thinks :( The only thing it seems to have brought us so far is condensation which we never had before having the cavity wall insulation!!!!

that reminds of my days on skye.. we lived up on this plateau half way up a rather large hill.

i would peg my clothes out on an old disconnected from the mains telephone wire (don't worry we checked first!) and it was sooooo windy there that even if it rained lightly my clothing would dry. BUT you HAD to use a lot of pegs on most days and they had to be those rounded ones that you force down rather heavily til you hear them sorta click in place... if not you'd find your clothes a few hundred feet down the crofts hill probably lying on top of sheep poo :rotfl:

once i got the hang of that though it was brilliant, if not a little scary sometimes, i once got whacked really hard with a pair of jeans that the wind blew at me and got knocked off kilter...started rolling down the hill :D

more on topic... last night i decided to just leave the heater on for about 4 hours. it's reasonable in here and i left my dehydrator running last night as well so the kitchen is cozy too...there is always more i can bake if we need a top up at least the oven kills two birds with one stone!
