I never have nor never will have the heating pump away all day

My mam always did have and the year we moved here she done the same and my oil bill was the size of the national debt - a full tank of 1200 ltrs lasted less then 6 weeks  That was 4 fills that year

So now I take control of the thermostat which luckily allows as many on and off times as required.

The worse thing about having it on a low back ground heat is then that norm starts to feel cold so we were still sat with the heating on wrapped in blankets.

Now we have the stoves ( one on each floors living room) and burn smokeless and logs to supplement the oil. The heating comes on and off for short periods throughout the day so none of the bathrooms or bedrooms get cold and we both have control over what is a comfortable heat for us to sit in - their living room is a hot house, mine is a nice comfy heat and Im not throwing a hissy about doors being left open leaving the heat to escape

Oil bill has now been HALVED since that first year. Even last winter we got by on a lot less then the previous year even though most days was -10

Our CH went on last night for the first time in the evening, although it has been on in the mornings for the last week. We have been making do with a flame effect convection heater in the lounge.

The rear of our place faces due north and we seem to really suffer when the wind is coming from the north as it was yesterday. Today it has moved around to the SW and feels much more mild, even though its wet.
  • Brrrrr it is cold today, all wrapped up... will keep it off tonight unless the fiance really moans when he comes over.. he understands no heat over at mine!!

Will be putting the snood and slippers on when I get home!

  • Very wet and windy here at the moment. Just seen a weather warning on the TV for later for most of the UK, Ireland, Wales and Scotland that we are due to have gale force winds up to 55mph inland and 80+mph coast wise.

No heating on here at the moment during the day but it will come on later before the kids bedtime as I find it really hard to get their bedroom warm of an evening for some reason. Our heating is on timer for morning (1hr) and evening (2hrs) and that seems to suit us fine at the moment. Am either pulling the curtains early or leaving them closed in the bedrooms (depending on what plans I have for the day/visitors etc).

I always thought that leaving the heating on but only activating to heat the rads when the temp reaches below XoC meant that I was spending more on my gas? I dont mind using the timer as its something we have always done but seeing other commenting on having their heating on all day but off until a certain temp got me wondering about the costs.

My in-laws have their heating on 24/7 pretty much all year around and it comes on when it gets below 18oC but I always thought this was a waste of money?

I put mine on the timer last night an hour in the morning and a couple at night. I live in a big old house with high ceilings and large sash windows. We have had it on for an hour every night for the last few weeks before baths. My bathroom is the coldest room in the house even with the bubble wrap on the window.

Ours is on all day - retired living in the North West - got 3 lots of £25 last year.

The reports today that its costing us old bangers an extra £700 per year to exist, just because some children in suits were corrupt and greedy are true.

Suppose I could chase her round the house again to get warm but when I catch her I forget why I started!

I do have heavy lined curtains in the livingroom (and blinds and double glazing ;) ) and they're so 1980's. Good quality but so ugly. We inherited them from the people who we bought the house from, but i'm not going to take them down until I can afford to replace them with similar quality ones. It's doing my head in though. :p

Oh, I wouldn't replace those curtains, they're vintage now, very chic.
