Crumbs. Thought we lived in the 21st century...
Absolutely right. No point being a miser either. If you are cold, then heating can and should be used.

I didnt want to get involved in this but we just remember please that everyone (including yourself) is entitled to their opinion and we dont know each others personal circumstances. There may be a reason why people cant/arent use their heating - please dont judge ;)

Still off for me but I have given in and bought a snood/ hat/balaclava (sp) thing and fingerless gloves.

I am still going for not turning it on at all this year cos next year is going to be a damn sight colder for us so might as well get a jump on freezing..lol

it will be interesting to compare my bill with people in the uk--i have a fairly large 4 bedroomed appartment but here as i have said before the government makes international agreements on prices with neighbouring countries who have a lot of gas--they drive a hard bargain because these countries have to pipe their products across the country to get into southern europe--the uk is at the end of the pipeline and dealing with a government controlled company in gazprom.

Absolutely - and I gave my opinion.

The only apparent reason why the particular person has not put their heating on is that they don't see the "point !!!!ing money up the wall".

In my opinion, shelter and heat are two of the most basic requirements for living. Not sure how staying warm can be seeing as "!!!!ing money up the wall"

I am petrified of January and February.Normally couldnt give a monkies. We have a little baby boy this year and he is only 8 weeks old though.Others big enough to wrap up.Made them put their pjs and dressing gowns on straight after school yesterday.

Proper cold for me is when its so cold,I have to stretch down to my divan draws ,get my underwear out and put them on under the duvet, lol.

Oh yes my heating has gone on.But only when I am bathing the baby.Otherwise I have a small electric heater that has hardly been on.But is there to heat the living room.No point in heating the whole house when me and kids stay in living room.

be interesting to know whether this economising with the heat causes more or less colds--i get more colds because i go from warm to cold places during the day--but being cold isnt nice but does it cause you colds??

we put our heating on on the 3rd i think. no one was ill before that except dh had a bit of a cold maybe from the air con at work . i thought ds1 was getting ill so kept the heating on even though it got milder and i wanted to turn it off (lots of bugs going around school last week apparently). he was fine until end of the week then he got ill, dh got ALOT worse and ds2 got ill at weekend. i now have it! All in the space of a week with the heating on!!! dd has the small box room which is the coldest and she has not got ill. I had the cold box room in our house when i was little and the only time i was off school was when was i had measles. i never had colds or flu.

so maybe having the heating on does spread germs more! But it is alot nicer getting out of shower on a morning in a warm bathroom rather than a icy one!!! :rotfl:

Mine's still off and will keep it that way! Not got a fireplace or anything, was thinking about making some kind of indoor stove! Does get cold, have to go to bed fully clothed :rotfl:

Funny how things can be interpreted in different ways isnt it :rotfl: I read it and thought that the first comment that they didnt have a fireplace or anything was the reason why they didnt have any on and of course not everyone is in the position to afford the kind of money it would take to put a heating system in.

I agree with you though that shelter is a basic requirement for living but staying warm can be found through many forms. Sorry if I came ona bit strong before but sometimes its hard to tell how things are meant when written down (as tone of voice cant be heard) and the use of the word "miser" got my back up :D

Having a little one does change a lot I think, I might have the heating on some days for me but as I am painfully aware that will not be a possiblity next year (and it gets colder in Bulgaria) I am trying to be brave. I am however doing a good line in grumpy and last night I made the poor dog come to bed under the covers with me as even with socks,PJ's and a hat on I was still cold.
I am hoping though that I will get over it this year and that I will then be able to cope with life without heating and proper windows.:rotfl:

i dont mind my daughter having her electric heater on in her bedroom in the morning deep into winter--she doesnt mind the bathroom and rest of the house being cold in the morning but i like to think of her warm as she gets ready.--when we are all in of an evening on cold nights we have the heating on til bed time--we dont normally get home til about 9 of a work night so 3 hours of comfort is acceptable--cold nights generally start towards the end of nov until the end of february--last year i was used about 30 quids worth of gas a month for the 3 peak months of winter--the eleccy was about 40 for the same period--

    I've been Money Tipped!

Its good we can all share opinions :)

My heating has been on to day because I've got a cold and feel cold and don't want to do as much as usual while not firing on all cylinders. Usually I begrudge the heating as while money is going on that its not going on other important things. Usually I'm able to stay warm by stepping up the housework, outside work or doing lots of ironing, this is cheaper, gets stuff done and keeps me active...in MY situation this is less wasteful than putting the heating on would be. but things change, like today..not feeling great so take the pace down and put the heating on...I'll try not to have too many days like these because lazier, heating on days means less money available for repairing the house/planting the garden/life.

re ''miserly'' I think there are two basic MSE types: those of us who have a little bit of miser in us to be at MSE to make money go as far as possible into life/savings/whatever or those who are here because they now need to be a little more miserly! :) tips on how to prolong the period in which we don't use heating, or minimise heating use is part of that for me. Pushing it into a time of making oneself ill avoidably are not. I think we have to assume each person will know where their/families cut off point is, but my guess is the in-between period is where more people struggle...e.g. turning on heating for an hour not four, or how to get through the hours when kids are not in the house.

I'm finding in my new house keeping it a little warm is easier than warming it up from scratch. As the condensation is proving an issue this is going to take some adjusting for me as I work out what suits this house with airing and heating.
