Mine is firmly on now, it's been so wet and freezing the last few days. I have it to come on an hour before everyone gets up and it goes off on timer about an hour after bedtime.

I live in a big old, draughty terrace and it takes an age and a mountain of heat to get it warm. I find it more comfortable to keep it warm all the time rather than let it cool down too much and then have to put it on high to get it warm again.

i was looking at my yearly bills for gas today and i noticed how little we use compared to how much it cost to put the combi and gas pipe in--it cost me 1885 gbp and we have used 120 pounds in the whole year--i was using about 250gbp in oil before we had gas and 92 quid for cooking and hot water propane--so 350 a year in total--so i have saved 350 - 120---230 gbp by having gas --so about 8 years to get my money back on the combi---need replacing by then lol !!!--it is luxxxxury though having gas once youve lived with oil and propane!!

we're on oil. Part of the motivation for being miserly :) we thought about a gas cooker but decided the faff would be more than it was worth, I am a keen cook but can cope with electric more than I can cope with the gas running out on me!

im still hopeing to hold off until the weekend, can then top the meter up properly and not worry quite as much over the coming weeks

Admire you for keeping going, I have been in the same shoes, not easy.

At least you can have a bit more heat come weekend, the weather is getting quite nasty now. Take care of you and your littlelies. Sending virtual sunshine:) A warm glow costs nowt.

Oil makes you think twice about putting the heating on.

When I lived in London and was on the gas with a wonderfully efficient combi boiler - heating was never an issue - if it was cold it went on simple as that. I would think nothing of running it all night if I was sat up and cold ( insomnia)

Now Im on the oil and I begrudge having it on.Having to pay for it in one lump sum and then seeing your tank deplete really makes you aware how much you are using and how much it costs.

Having the olds live with me means its on more then I would like. But I cant make them economise any further then I am, they dont understand how much it costs as they have nothing else to spend their money on
  • I have now given in and put the heating on for the first time.
I realised that i was being rather selfish as i have two sons, age 4 and 2 years and if they were to fall ill then i would feel really guilty so its on :)
Im well in credit with DD's so i wont fight it any more.
Looked on the thermometer outside about 2 hours ago and it was 1 degree, the house was 14 so that pushed me lol :)

i had it on not long agin as in october im sure it wasn't as cold then so kicking myself now for the whole not waiting bit bg gave me credit on the leech meter a month ago (£15) as i have due fuel pre payment with them, would have been more handy on the gas

if i knew how/what i was doing i have a empty fireplace, there is the surround and then just a big gap, need something to put in it (no idea of what or costs) and would need the chimney swept, a huge hole in the wall (thats how i see it) is not great for keeping heat in
